Dryden in full stride
Dryden High’s track and field squad hit the start of the regular dual meet season in full stride on Monday.
The host Purple Lions had little trouble posting Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division victories over two visiting foes. The boys defeated Whitney Point 111-16 and got past Union Springs 73-58, while the girls dominated Whitney Point 110-29 and ran away from Union Springs 110-40.
“These girls are coming off an amazing indoor season and are rolling to start the outdoor season,” said Dryden coach Lee Stuttle, triple winner Mackenzie Todd leading the way on opening day.
“The boys will once again be strong in the jumps and sprints,” added Coach Stuttle, who singled out Bryan Arnold for his victories in the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter run and the discus.
Groton boys and girls both split in a home meet with Moravia and perennial power Lansing. While Lansing boys beat the Indians 93-30 and Moravia 95-30, Groton came away with 64-56 win over rival Moravia. Lansing girls also dominated, beating Groton 97-38 and Moravia 95-42. Moravia also got the best of Groton 93-29.
“Our girls’ team is the largest that we’ve seen in a few years, but a majorityof our athletes are first-year rookies and this was their first experience with a varsity track meet,” pointed out Groton coach Scott Weeks, who got big days from veterans Allison Cronk and Brenna Hahn.
Trumansburg was the top squad at a three-school gathering in Marathon, where the boys beat the hosts 112-24 and Southern Cayuga 124-11. Marathon pulled out a 65-44 win over Southern Cayuga.
On the girls’ side, Trumansburg also dominated by thumping Marathon 95-31 and Southern Cayuga 93-22. Marathon was also edged out by Southern Cayuga 45-39.
— In Dryden, the boys won 10 events including triple winner Arnold — who went 54.5 in the 400m, 24.3 over 200m and flipped the discus 96 feet-7 inches.
Bryant Stuttle won the long jump (20-10) and triple jump (43-5), while the Purple Lions got individual victories from Bryan Norman in the high jump (5-8), Will Holt in the 100m hurdles (16.2), Liam Joyce in the 100m dash (11.8) and Nick Muldoon in the 400m hurdles (1:04.5.).
Todd topped Dryden girls by winning the 100m hurdles (17.3), the long jump (16-11.5) and the triple jump (32-5). Stalwarts Abbey Yatsko and Rachel Hutchinson also excelled, Yatsko first in the 100m and 200m sprints while Hutchinson ran off with the 400m and 800m races. The Purple Lions swept all three relays to go along with firsts from Shaina Sullivan in the high jump and Megan Cornelius in the pole vault.
— In Groton, the host Indians captured a pair of first places in the boys’ meet. Joel Twitchell was first in the 110m hurdles in 17.6 and Josh Marlette won the 400m in 56.0 for the Indians.
The best showing for Groton girls came in the 1,500m run, where Hahne’s 5:51.90 winning time nosed out teammate Cronk who was clocked in 5:51.91. Hahne went on to win the 800m (2:45.2), Cronk was first over 3,200m (12:38.1) and the Indians were first in the 3,200m relay to open the meet.
— At Marathon, Elizabeth Jewiss ran to a pair of victories for the host Olympians in the girls’ meet. The senior showed the way in the 1,500m in 5:00.42 and came back to take the 3,000m in 12:22.1. Marathon’s only other first game in the 3,200m relay.
