Thursday
at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell the best 45 golfers in
Section IV teed it up to begin the process of determine the best 9
players who will qualify for the State Tournament on June 2-3. Players
had to maintain a scoring average of 5 over par or better to qualify for
Thursday’s first round.
Dryden
had two players competing for the first time in over 15 years. Ryan
Whitaker and Jonathan Becker both qualified for the second day of play,
to be held Saturday morning at The RTJ.
Whitaker,
a senior, is competing here for the third straight year and also made
it to the second day last year. He is in tenth place with an 85 and very
much in the thick of the competition.
Becker,
a junior, is competing here for the first time. With most of the 21
players bunched within five shots of each other, a solid round for
Saturday Becker might also earn him a coveted top 9 spot.
Trumansburg
Freshman Dan Lapp, who finished fourth in the state last year, leads
the field with a score of 77. Other IAC North golfers to qualify for the
second day include Union Springs Senior Austin Thomas (82) and Marathon
Junior Zach Brandstadt (87).
