Varsity Golf Second at 2013 IAC Golf Championships

Wednesday at Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Horseheads, Dryden’s “fantastic four” seniors led them to a 2nd place finish in the 2013 IAC golf championship and completed Dryden’s best golf season in over 10 years.

Dryden (15-1), after winning the regular season IAC North Title over Trumansburg (14-2) last week was not able to keep pace with the Blue Raiders, who got excellent play throughout their lineup and posted a dominating score of 404. Dryden narrowly beat out Lansing for second place when Jared Reilley squeaked out a 1-stroke win over his Lansing opponent after the two teams were deadlocked through the first 5 scores.

Dryden was led by Senior Ryan Whitaker who shot 83 and finished 6th. Whitaker was also named first team all-IAC all star for the third straight year and was named to the academic all-star team for graduating seniors.

Riley Brewer and Jared Reilley were named second team all-IAC allstars for the second time.

Greg Nostrand was named as “salutatorian” of the Academic All-Star team (second best overall GPA among IAC golf seniors), and was also an All-IAC second team selection.

Marcus Converse was also named to the All-Academic team. Dryden also bids farewell to seniors Randy Bushnell and Tyler O’Connor and thanks them for their contributions to the team.

Dryden’s two non-seniors in the starting lineup were also honored for their excellent play this season: Junior Jonathan Becker was named first team IAC All Star and Aleks Schuler was named second team All IAC All Star.

The Dean Winters award was presented to Tony Mekos of Trumansburg, whose 77 was the low round of the day by a graduating senior. Winters was part of a great Dryden HS golf dynasty in the 1970’s and then went on to excel at Cornell University in Golf and academics. The award is given annually in honor of Winters great golf career which was tragically cut short when he was paralyzed in a traffic accident. The award also serves as a chilling reminder to our seniors and other young drivers about the dangers of drinking and driving and the life-changing consequences that can come from one poor decision.

Congratulations to our Seniors for their great careers and a big Thank You for all they have done for Dryden Golf.

Season of Many Firsts ends for Dryden Lax

It was a season of first for Dryden - First program wins over Seton Catholic and Owego, First time with 6 and then 7 wins.  Most goals per game scored.  Least amount of goals allowed, multiple players on the all-star squads (6 versus only one last year) and last but not least our first post season play.  That sectional games was last night at Maine Endwell.

We lost 15-8, were down 12-0 at half and kept their heads up and played to the final whistle. It was even running time (Mercy Rule for 12 goal or more lead) for most of the last 24 minutes and we out scored them 8-3. We were short handed by 4 players (three starters) and one was the goalie. The back up hadn't touched a goalie stick until yesterday's practice since he filled in in the 2nd and 3rd games of the season and still had 16 saves. The temperature was 87 degrees and that had to be pushing 95 on the artificial turf field. Proud of them for showing character, and perseverance as well as keeping their cool in a game that could have turned very ugly. I'd much rather lose with character than win without it. Way to Go Lions - you've shown the league that we aren't a guaranteed win for the opposition anymore. Congrats to the seniors and good luck in the future.

State Golf Qualiifiers

From the coach -

VARSITY GOLF
Thursday at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell the best 45 golfers in Section IV teed it up to begin the process of determine the best 9 players who will qualify for the State Tournament on June 2-3. Players had to maintain a scoring average of 5 over par or better to qualify for Thursday’s first round.

Dryden had two players competing for the first time in over 15 years. Ryan Whitaker and Jonathan Becker both qualified for the second day of play, to be held Saturday morning at The RTJ.

Whitaker, a senior, is competing here for the third straight year and also made it to the second day last year. He is in tenth place with an 85 and very much in the thick of the competition.

Becker, a junior, is competing here for the first time. With most of the 21 players bunched within five shots of each other, a solid round for Saturday Becker might also earn him a coveted top 9 spot.

Trumansburg Freshman Dan Lapp, who finished fourth in the state last year, leads the field with a score of 77. Other IAC North golfers to qualify for the second day include Union Springs Senior Austin Thomas (82) and Marathon Junior Zach Brandstadt (87).

Lady Lions Laxers get first win of the season -

Being down 9-2 at halftime you might think the Dryden Lions Girls Lacrosse team might just mail it in.  It was the last game of a win less season.  Instead they outscored Chenango Forks 9-2 in the second half forcing Overtime with a score of 11-11.  The scored remained tied at 12-12 after the 6 minute overtime (2 - 3 minute periods) after each team scored one.  With 2:16 left in the second sudden victory overtime Vanessa Scott hit the winner and the celebration started.

Dryden fell to 9-3 in IAC play and 9-6 overall as visiting Trumansburg won 12-6.  For Trumansburg, Jeff Cotterill picked up the win.  For Dryden, Alan Davis took the loss.  Trumansburg got on the board in the top of the first as Cam Lueder reached on a two-out single, and scored on a Colin Fellows RBI double to make it 1-0.  Trumansburg would take a 3-0 lead in the top of the third as Glen Addicott and Alex Shippy walked to start the inning.  After a strikeout, Colin Fellows would walk to load the bases.  Addicott would score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.  Both runners would advance.  Shippy would come around and score on Sam Houseworth's RBI sac fly to make it 3-0.  Dryden would put 2 runs on the board in the bottom of the third as Drew Wojcinski reached on a walk and stole second.  Wojcinski would score on Josh Faulkner's RBI single to right to make it 3-1.  Faulkner would score on Derek Wilson's RBI single to make it 3-2.  Trumansburg would score 5 runs in the top of the fourth inning.  The big blow, a Colin fellows 2-run homerun.  After trailing 12-2 in the fifth inning, Dryden scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth on Derek Wilson's 3-run homerun to cut the deficit to 12-5.  In the bottom of the sixth Drew Wojcinski scored on Bruno Bugliosi's RBI single, but a baserunning mistake would eliminate the potential threat.  "Our mental approach was not there today.  We have to leave mistakes in the past and move on.  Today we did not do a good job of that.  Hopefully we can rebound tomorrow."  "The walks were problematic for us today.  We have got to focus and throw strikes.  Eight of Trumansburg's twelve runs reached base via the base on balls."  Dryden hosts Moravia tomorrow.

Dryden Boys Lax gets first program win over Owego Free Academy

In Dryden's short history of boys lacrosse (7 years) they have only beaten 4 different teams.  Whitney Point, Elmira Notre Dame, EFA and Oneonta.  Owego Free Academy can now be added to that list.

On a beautiful night at TC3 the Dryden Laxers came out with an intensity that lasted all 48 minutes.  Contributions came from all grade levels and positions. Many positives pumped the team up and a few errors were quickly forgotten about.

6 of 9 goals were assisted.  Man-up was 4 of 6 while our defense held OFA to 1 of 4 with man-up.

Dryden held the advantage in ground balls and face-offs and had 18 successful clears on 24 attempts.  All three are very important procession statistics.  Nate Walker got 6 of his 11 saves in the final period when the defense clamped down and held them to one unsettled goal after a failed clear.

4 games remain (one road game at Chenango Valley and 3 at home, END, EFA, Seton Catholic)  and all should be very competitive .

5 Questions with Abbie Yatsko

Ithaca Journal

Abbey Yatsko finished 18th in the 300 meters and 29th in the 55-meter dash at the state indoor meet.
Abbey Yatsko finished 18th in the 300 meters and 29th in the 55-meter dash at the state indoor meet.

DRYDEN — Abbey Yatsko is not wasting any time on the Dryden track and field team.
Despite being just a freshman, Yatsko has already broken five school records in her two seasons of varsity competition. This past weekend, at the Dan Fravil Ithaca Relays, she and her Dryden teammates broke a pair of school relay records.
Over the winter, she competed in the state indoor track championships, placing 18th in the 300 meters (42.21 seconds) and 29th in the 55-meter dash (7.62).
Yatsko’s success is not all that surprising since she grew up around the sport. Her father, Chris, was a runner, but she is exceeding usual expectations for freshmen at the high school level. She carries herself with confidence and fits in well on the team, too.
“I respect the older kids, but I feel like they are OK with me,” Yatsko said with a laugh.
She hopes to keep breaking records, and she has plenty of time to do it. In this week’s edition of “Five Questions,” we ask Yatsko about her favorite activities, who she looks up to and what she hopes to achieve in track and field:
Why do you enjoy track and field?
My dad was a runner, so it has always been a thing in our family. I used to do Junior Olympics at Ithaca, and then I started running modified in seventh grade and varsity in eighth grade.
Since you are just a freshman, what are some things you hope to improve on in the next few years?
I really just want to keep improving my times. I want to chase after school records.
Is track and field a year-round thing for you?
I do the winter season and the spring season. In the fall and the summer, I don’t do as much.
Who are some people you look up to?
My parents are always there for me. All of my teammates and coaches have been awesome and there to support me.
What kinds of hobbies do you have?
I like to ride horses. I help at a farm in Trumansburg and that’s fun. I also like being with my family and friends.

Dryden improved to 7-5 overall and 7-2 in IAC play as they defeated visiting Marathon 5-2.  Alan Davis picked up the win, his second on the year.  For Marathon, Jacob Doran picked up the loss.  Dryden took an early lead in the bottom of the first as Noah Welgoss led off the game with a single up the middle.  Welgoss would steal second base.  After a strikeout, Derek Wilson followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0 as Welgoss scored.  Wilson would steal second base and score on Brian Colbert's RBI double to left-center to make it 2-0.  Colbert would then score on Alan Davis' RBI single to left to make it 3-0.  Dryden would add another run in the bottom of the third as Brian Colbert hit a solo homerun to deep left-center to make it 4-0.  Dryden would add another run in the bottom of the fourth as Bruno Bugliosi reached on an error with one out.  The error allowing Bugliosi to end up on third base after the play.  Bugliosi would score on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.  Alan Davis was the story of the game.  Davis went 6 innings without allowing a hit, while also striking out 14.  Marathon was without 3 senior starters due to a field trip.  "Alan threw the ball well tonight.  The 14 strikeouts are impressive, but only allowing two walks was just as impressive.  If Alan can limit his walks, he has a chance to be successful for us every time he takes the mound."  Davis would be pulled after 6 innings without allowing a hit because his pitch count had reached 94.  Marathon would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Hoellerer reached on a bunt single, the first marathon hit of the game, to lead off the inning.  Isaiah Brooks would follow with a single, allowing Hoellerer to advance to third.  An attempted caught stealing allowed Hoellerer to score to make it 5-1.  Brooks would come around to score on an error to make it 5-2.  Bugliosi would strikeout the side in the seventh to finish the game.  Dryden hosts Groton tomorrow.
