The newly
resurrected Dryden Cross Country program ran in it's first race of the
season at the Marathon Dual meet against Marathon, Groton, Moravia,
Trumansburg, and Southern Cayuga Tuesday, September 9.

In their first race, the Dryden boys placed two runners in the top 10: Morningstar Fowler (sixth, 19:57) and Tor Wildenstein (seventh, 20:04). The team's other scorers were Kelvin Green (11th, 20:36), Eric Varvayanis (18th,21:11) and Jacob Yatsko (22nd, 21:25). The boys' combined team score of 64 points was enough to give them second place behind Trumansburg who scored 30 points.
In the girls' race, Abbey Yatsko placed third with a time of 22:50,
and the other Dryden finishers were Haley Cornelius (13th, 26:10),
Shaina Sullivan (15th, 26:30) and Teaghan Murphy (21st, 27:31).
"I couldn't be happier with the performance of
all the athletes on the team in the first race of the season," said
Dryden head coach Travis Miller. "This was also the first cross country
race ever for the entire team, and we had a late start to our training
this season. We came into this race just looking to run smart, strong,
gain experience, and finish. Every day I'm shocked at the commitment
level and motivation displayed by a group of individuals who are all
entirely new to the sport. The team out performed my expectations today,
and will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses."
The boys of Trumansburg were led by freshman
Evan Whittaker, who finished first overall and Ben Pesco, who placed
third.  Evan and Ben were followed by Sam Ives (fifth), Will Westlake
(eighth) and Ollie Sugarman (13th) who rounded out the top five T-Burg
finishers. There were nine Blue Raiders in the top 25 as strong
performances were had by Dominic Mikula (19th), Matt Haefner (21st),
Lucas Puleo (23rd) and Austin Voorhees (25th).  The Raiders have a week
before their next race which is a home meet on Tuesday.
"This was a better start for us than I
envisioned," said head coach Larry Glanton. "We all looked comfortable
and seemed like we were enjoying our run. I liked the way we worked
together, and we must continue to do that to reach our full potential as
a team. This was a wonderful beginning."
The Trumansburg Lady Raiders also opened their
fall cross country season with convincing wins at Marathon. The Lady
Raiders came away with team wins over Groton, Marathon, Moravia,
Southern Cayuga and Dryden. It took every centimeter of the 5000 meter
course to find an individual race winner as Bethany Murphy of Southern
Cayuga (22:16.6)  just edged Meave Gurche of Trumansburg (22:16.8). The
Raiders had five of the top 10 and a low score of 18 against complete
teams.
"Fantastic start to season," said head coach
Bryce DeSantis. "We were strong and confident on a hard course. Congrats
Claire, Emily, Megan Feely and Olivia who completed their first varsity
 cross country race."
