Dryden rolls at Groton

Ali Abel Ferretti recorded a double-double as Dryden High boys bounced back from its season-opening basketball loss to Moravia.
Abel-Ferretti scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Purple Lions rolled to a 53-26 IAC North Division win over host Groton Central inside Richard Court Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Dryden is 1-1 in IAC and overall play. Groton falls to 0-2.
In other North Division action, Whitney Point routed Union Springs 85-40 while Trumansburg at Southern Cayuga was postponed.
In IAC North girls’ play, Marathon opened its season with a 38-27 victory over Dryden, Lansing edged Moravia 52-47, Southern Cayuga topped Trumansburg 64-34 and Union Springs beat Whitney Point 56-46.
Dryden 53, Groton 26: “I thought our tempo was good, we just needed to do a better job of finishing,” Dryden coach Kim Brown said. “Joe DeLucia gave us a great lift off the bench tonight. He did a great job of taking what the defense gave him. His intelligent play really helped us in the second half.”
“We showed improvement” Groton coach John D’Antonio said. “Our guys played hard. We just need to shoot better.
“Dryden is big and long,” he added. “We couldn’t score inside.”
Abel-Ferretti scored six points in the first quarter as Dryden jumped to a 16-7 lead. The Purple Lions advantage grew to 27-9 by halftime and Brown was subbing freely the rest of the game.
Trevor Gardner added nine points to the winning attack. DeLucia and Ross Cole netted eight points each.
Nate Ossit paced Groton with eight points. Dylan Ellis and Will Stoughton added six points each.
Groton will host Union Springs Friday with a 5:30 p.m. JV start. Dryden will host Whitney Point with the JVs starting at 6 p.m.
IN IAC GIRLS’ PLAY —
Marathon 38, Dryden 27: Marathon slowly built is lead during first half play in its season opener. The Olympians led 7-2 after one quarter and 20-10 by halftime. Dryden (1-1) battled back in the third quarter to close the deficit to 26-22, but Marathon pulled away in the fourth quarter.
“Both teams were jittery at the start, but we played better in second quarter,” Marathon coach Mike Reilly said. “Our advantage was we were able to control the boards with Cindy Courtney, Eryn Griep and Megan Contri.”
Marathon freshman Cassidy Marsh made her varsity debut and led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Courtney, Griep and Contri each netted four points.
Katie Holland topped the Dryden scoring list with eight points. Vicky Leyburn added six points.
Marathon will travel to Southern Cayuga Friday. Dryden girls will travel to Whitney Point Friday. Both have 5:30 p.m. JV starts.
