VBBB Last night Dryden improved to 4-3 in IAC play with a 68-56
win over Marathon in the opening round of the Cortland Hiloday Tournament. Dryden will now face Cortland as they
defeated Homer in their opening round game.
Dryden was led by sophomore Ali-Abel-Ferretti who finished with career
highs, 32 points and 21 rebounds. Dryden
also got 9 points from freshman Trevor Gardner, while sophomore Matt McHerron
and seniors Ross Cole and Bruno Bugliosi each chipped in with 6 points. Marathon was led by senior Zach Brandstadt
who had 13 points, while senior Dan Lincoln added 11 and sophomore Ryan
Tillotson chipped in with 10 points.
Dryden took a 19-13 lead after the first quarter. Abel-Ferretti had 10 points in the opening
quarter. "We knew headed into the
game that Ali had a favorable match-up.
Defensively, Marathon decided to play him underneath, which allowed Ali
easy catches." Dryden would take a
40-27 lead into the locker room at half.
Abel-Ferretti with 13 points in the second quarter. "It was nice to have Ali available
throughout the first half. He has been
plagued with foul trouble during the previous few games which has limited his
touches and our offensive capabilities."
Abel-Ferretti also had 12 rebounds after 2 quarters of play. Marathon came out in the third quarter and
scored the first 6 points forcing a Dryden timeout. "During the halftime break we discussed
the importance of getting off to a fast start in the third quarter. Unfortunately, we were passive and Marathon
was aggressive." Marathon would
outscore Dryden 18-12 in the third quarter.
Abel-Ferretti with 7 in the quarter for Dryden. Marathon would get as close as 6 points. Trevor Gardner led Dryden with 8 of his 9
points in the fourth quarter.
"Trevor has got to be more of a scoring threat for us. He has the capability of scoring, he just has
to be more assertive from that aspect."
The varsity championship game will begin approximately 7pm. The Dryden JV's defeated Marathon. They will face off against Cortland in the JV
championship at 1:45.
