Dryden Town Talk: Teens offer a handshake of friendship to exchange student

From Cathy Wakeman's Dryden Town Talk

This summer marks 22 years that we have lived in Dryden. In these 22 years, I have grown to love this town and the people in it, but I have never been more proud than I was this past Thursday.
This past Wednesday, Dan and I became parents again. We welcomed into our family a son from Japan, Masahiro Kiba, who will be living with us and two other families during his 10-month Rotary Exchange. Among the many details of this transition is getting settled into American high school, an overwhelming proposition at any age. With less than 48 hours in our fair town, Masa ventured into a sea of purple, his first varsity soccer practice. Coach Laszlo Engel and athletic director Brian Ford graciously arranged for a place on the team and clearing all of the procedural hurdles for this to happen.
As we started up the rise to the field, that uncertain pause of where to go first must have been clear on our faces. Without hesitation, a contingent of purple clad young men started down the field. With wide smiles and extended hands, they offered generous welcome and kind introductions, breaching a chasm of language and culture.
Having known most of these fine fellows since they were toddlers, my heart melted with pride at what fine young men they have become, and how well they represented their team, their families and their town.
My hat is off to you, Ben Lewis, Ryan Prunty, Levi Crognale, John Varvayanis, Gabby Guisado, Dan Fuller, Josh Hutchinson, and Jon Becker. As we cheer from the sidelines for you and the rest of the 2013 Dryden High soccer team this season, it will be for more than just your amazing soccer skills. It will be for the fine young gentlemen who carry and share respect. Dryden is rightfully proud.
