Varsity Boys Basketball Cortland Tournament 12/28 & 12/29
Dryden
improved to 4-2 overall and in IAC play with a 61-60 win over marathon
at the cortland christmas tourney. Gage Ellis led Dryden with 20
points, while Bryan Norman chipped in with 14 points and Ali
Abel-Ferretti added 11 points. Marathon got 27 points from Jeff Contri,
15 from Zach brandstadt and 11 from Kody Barry. "Defensively we were
awful. Marathon played harder than us the entire game."
Marathon would take a 23-18 lead after the first quarter. "We got off
to a quick start, then got outplayed on both ends of the floor." With
Dryden behind 60-58, they would use a timeout and draw up a set. "I was
pretty sure we would still see a zone, so we werer pretty certain as to
what we would do. The set was drawn up so Bryan would receive the ball
in the paint off a pin-down screen, read the defense and play from
there. Gage was where he was supposed to be, however Bryan was not
available so we attacked Gage and he got a clean look from the corner.
We were fortunate it went in." With Dryden up 61-60, they would use
another timeout to set-up there defense. "We probably defended better
on that possession than any other one." Kody Barry would have to force
up a shot versus a double-team. The ball would get delected and Shawn
Moore would gather the lose ball. "I'm glad we
won, but we need consistency and leadership from this group or else we
are going to be in tight games all year." Dryden plays Cortland in the
title game. Dryden JV's beat Marathon by a score of 39-31. Noah
Welgoss led Dryden with 16 points. Dryden JV's will also play Cortland
in the title game.
