From the Coach - JV/Varsity Boys Basketball vs Moravia 1/16

From DSC Website - 01/16/2013
Dryden improved to 7-4 overall and 7-3 in IAC play with a 67-65 win at previously unbeaten Moravia.  Dryden was led by senior Bryan Norman who had a game-high 23 points, along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.  Senior Gage Ellis added 18 points, while freshman Ali Abel-Ferretti added 10 points and 7 rebounds.  Moravai was led by Chase Walker who had 21 points, while Chandler Benson chipped in with 20 and Dylan Powers added 11.  Moravia took a 21-16 lead after the first quarter.  "We helped quite a bit on Benson and got beat.  I wasn't disapponited who we allowed to get the looks, they just ahppened to make them."  Walker with 7 in the quarter.  "Offensively I thought we executed pretty well in the first quarter.  We ran our sets and got easy looks for the most part."  Norman with 7 in the first quarter and Abel-Ferretti with 6.  Dryden would get outscored 22-13 in the second quarter.  "We started to settle for jumpshots offensively and that hurt us.  Zones get some players to fall into that false sense of security that a 20-25 foot jumpshot is a good look.  We shot as many two-points jumpshots as three-point jumpshot (12) in the first half."  Moravia continued to make shots as Walker had 10 in the second quarter.   "Down 43-29 at half, I told the guys that they need to find a different mentality when they step inside the lines of the playing court.  We were not aggressive offensively and it showed."  Dryden would outscore Moravia 20-12 in the third to cut the deficit to 6 headed into  the fourth quarter.  Norman with 8 in the quarter for Dryden.  "We were attacking their zone and getting easy looks.  It also helped when they went under some of our screens in the zone allowing us open looks from good spots on the floor."  Dryden would take its first lead in the game late in the fourth quarter.  "Again, we continued to run our stuff and get good looks.  Defensively, we were solid and forced Moravia into difficult looks at times."  "Gage did a great job defending Chandler in the fourth quarter."  Benson had 2 points in the fourth quarter.  "Gage did not get any help.  He either forced Chandler to get rid of the ball or he made him take difficult, contested shots."  With Dryden up 65-63 with under 1 minute to play thanks to 2 Shawn Moore free-throws, Dylan Powers would get fouled as he attacked the rim.  Powers would make both free-throws to tie the score at 65.  Dryden would call at timeout with 30 seconds to play.  "I asked the guys what they were most comfortable with offensively.  Trevor Gardner spoke up quickly, so we were prepared to run a set versus a zone or a man."  "We attacked with 15 seconds on the clock and got exactly what we wanted.  Bryan Norman came off a screen against their zone and found Gage Ellis along the baseline for a easy lay-in."  "We had run that set several times during the game and had success with it.  It was nice to have success with it once again during a pressure-packed situation."  Moravia would inbounds the ball, cross the timeline and call a timeout.  After both teams used timeouts to figure out what they other was attempting to run, it would come down to the final play.  "When we saw Dylan was going to take the ball out-of-bounds, we figured a flare screen would be set for him and he would enter the ball to Chandler.  Fortunately that is what happened and we defended it well."  Sam Allen got a deep look from the right wing, but the shot did not make it to the rim.  The ball would get batted to the right corner and the buzzer would sound.  "This is a good win for us.  We came off a difficult loss Friday in which we played very hard.  Hopefully we can build some momentum and we head to the later part of the season.  Eighth grader Trevor Gardner finished the game with 2 points, 7 assists, 2 rebounds and 0 turnovers.  "Defensively Trevor was great tonight.  He was an emotional leader for us on the defensive end in the second-half."  "Bryan played an all-around great game tonight.  He held Dylan Powers to 11, while leading us offensively."
