From Ithaca Journal 01/31/2013
DRYDEN — Dryden High track star Rachel Hutchinson almost ran down a different path.
But now, she is just running past everyone.
For
a while, the Purple Lions senior felt she was destined to play soccer.
But like a lot of young athletes, she found herself enjoying more than
one sport. After a coach suggested track and field, she gave it a try —
and has never looked back.
Hutchinson
has made a name for herself in the area during her impressive senior
campaign, just recently breaking the school records in both the 1,500
meters (4 minutes, 46.99 seconds) and the 3,000 meters (10:34.53). And
in December, she ran the third-fastest high school time in the country
this season at 1,000 meters — a 2:58.79.
As
she continues to break her own records, she has set the bar higher and
hopes to reach more goals this season. Her ultimate short-term goal: a
berth in the indoor state meet in the 1,000 meters. In this week’s
edition of “Five Questions,” we ask Hutchinson about her goals, her
heroes and her plans for after graduation.
How have your coaches and teammates influenced you as you’ve gotten older?
My
coach (Lee Stuttle) has done a good job, whether it’s picking out
workouts or helping us improve, and my teammates are always positive and
they have always cheered me on. I really enjoy running with them.
How did it feel to break the 1,000-meter school record recently?
It
was really exciting and it was not something I expected at the
beginning of the season. I expected to be faster this season, but I also
did not expect to be under 3 minutes at this point.
Besides track, what kind of hobbies do you have?
I really enjoy reading, especially fantasy novels. I also enjoy playing different games and hanging out with my friends.
Do you have any role models or heroes?
I
really admire my mom. For a while she worked, but now she stays home
and takes care of us. Some people look down on that, but I have seen her
work really hard to take care of us and do everything she could to help
us succeed. I just really admire that. ... She has always been there to
drive me to different activities or help me on questions, whether its
homework or friendships. She has always been someone I can feel
comfortable going to, and I really appreciate that. One thing I really
appreciate is that she always prays for me whenever I race.
What are your plans following graduation?
I’m
planning to go to either Roberts Wesleyan (in Rochester) or Houghton
(southeast of Buffalo), and I’m going to run track in college.

JV Girls Basketball vs. Southern Cayuga 1/29
The JV Girls drop another game against Southern Cayuga 21-29, they have lost 4 straight sliding to 7-6 on the year. Maggie Cole and Bailey Rose led the team with 8 pts a piece. Offensively we have struggled over the last month with opportunities to score and finish. We are not a very balanced offensive team right now which makes it very difficult to win games. We came right out and scored two quick baskets against their defensive set, which has been difficult for us to do. I thought we were definitely more aggressive getting to the basket, but in return could not finish shots and a combination of poor free throw production (1-15). In order for us to get back on the winning track we need production offensively.Tuesday, January 29, 2013

IAC Basketball Stretch Run Preview - Ithaca.com
Jesse Disbrow
It was a quiet week, all things considered. I was on vacation the past week, so it turned out to coincide well. Though I’ve still kept my ear to the sports pulse.
For example, I’ve been watching all our local basketball teams to see who has a shot at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference divisional titles or at least could earn a sectional playoff spot.
For the boys the crème de la crème is Lansing. They stumbled a bit in the last month, but otherwise are still state ranked and still are atop the IAC North Large School Division. The catch is they are tied with Whitney Point both in division standings, 3-1, and IAC standings, 9-2. What’s more Dryden isn’t far behind with a 2-2 division record and an 8-3 overall record. Lansing has control of the division and has the all-important final game of the season against Whitney Point on February 8.
For the first time in recent memory, John Filzen has a squad in Groton he can’t salvage. The depth that marked each of his last few teams just isn’t there and the rest of the competition in the north divisions is just as fierce as always. There is a real chance Filzen and the Indians can’t recover from their 4-8 start to take a spot in the sectional tournament.
In the South Division, however, Spencer-Van Etten and Newfield are still very much in the hunt for playoff spots. The boys would need league leading Odessa-Montour to seriously stumble in order to have a chance at Division titles, but both teams are at or above the .500 mark and should find enough wins down the stretch to earn postseason berths.
Lansing is also the class of girls basketball in the IAC. They’ve only lost to STAC opponent Johnson City, and only by two points at that. Coach Stu Dean always demands the best from his girls and their best is usually more than enough to put away teams in the IAC. They have routinely won by 30 or more points in their IAC matches. The Johnson City match should tell them that they are ready to compete with the top teams in Class C, but need to work harder to ensure that.
A conflux of talent has led to Groton leading the IAC Small north. The girls have been getting better and better each year, and this year they’re hoping to represent their division in the IAC playoffs. The South Small Division leading Newfield girls are looking to earn a division title this year, and it’s still within grasp, however, they need to make sure they stay on the winning path. If they can top Elmira Notre Dame on February 5, among other games, they should win it.

Ellis also added 10 rebounds. Shawn Moore added 16 points, Bryant Stuttle chipped in with 13 points, while Bryan Norman and Ali Abel-Ferretti added 11 points each. Moore also had 8 rebounds, while Abel-Ferretti had 7. For SC, Vince Stebbins had a team-high 13 points, while Tom Miller added 10 points. Dryden took a 24-12 lead after the first quarter. "We came out aggressive offensively. We didn't settle for the deep look and were able to get some looks inside. I was very pleased with the way we attacked the offensive glass." Ellis and Abel-Ferretti each had 6 points in the quarter. Dryden would extend the lead at halftime as they outscored SC 21-10 in the second quarter to take a 45-22 lead into the locker room. Ellis had 9 points in the second quarter, giving him 15 at the break. "Gage was aggressive on both ends of the floor tonight. He has the ability to dominate both ends of the floor, and he was able to do that tonight." Dryden would outscore SC 20-17 in the third quarter to take a 26-point lead into the fourth quarter. Bryant Stuttle had 7 points in the 3rd quarter for Dryden. Vince Stebbins had 9 in the third quarter for SC. "Bryan Norman and Shawn Moore did an outstanding job defending Stebbins tonight. From the Coach - JV Girls Basketball vs.Moravia 1/16
The JV girls dropped another game last night against a very tough Moravia squad 23-46. The girls overall record is now 7-4. We had a very sloppy first quarter, trailing by 12 going into the second. We prepared for their press and knew exactly how they positioned themselves, but mentally did not execute. I took us a full quarter to settle down and start placing the ball in the spots where we needed to go when they pressed us. The first quarter really hurt us and we never recovered from it. We did come out in the second half and played a much better third quarter. We were able to gets some quick steals and score which allowed us to set up our press. We did a really nice job staying with our zone press causing Moravia to make some poor decisions. Offensively we struggled to find points. The looks were there, but we just could not captalize. Too many turnovers and not winning the rebound battle inside will usually result in a long night of basketball. I give credit to our girls because they never gave up. They continued to work hard and did there best to climb back into the game. They were able to cut the deficit to 9 late in the third quarter. Moravia would pull away early in the fourth with the lack of production on the offensive side for us. We have been averaging around 20 pts the last four games offensively and that will not win you alot of ball games. The girls play again next Friday against a much improved Marathon team.

High School Roundup: Dryden boys hand 12th-ranked Moravia first loss
From Ithaca Journal
01/17/2013
Senior Bryan Norman scored a game-high 23 points, while holding Moravia star Dylan Powers to 11 points, as the host Dryden Purple Lions knocked off the previously undefeated Blue Devils, 67-65, in Interscholastic Athletic Conference action Tuesday night.
Gage Ellis added 18 points, including the game-winning layup off an assist from Norman in the final 15 seconds for Dryden (7-4, 7-3 IAC), which rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit. The winners survived a last-second shot by Moravia (9-1, 9-1 IAC), ranked 12th in this week’s state Class C poll.
Six-foot-5 freshman Ali Abel-Ferretti chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds for Dryden.
Chase Walker led the Blue Devils with 21 points, while 6-7 junior center Chandler Benson added 20.
The Blue Devils led after the first quarter, 21-16, then outscored Dryden by nine in the second quarter to take a 43-29 lead into the intermission. Dryden coach Kim Brown said his team struggled against Moravia’s zone defense in the second eight minutes.
“We started to settle for jumpshots offensively and that hurt us,” he said in an email. “Zones get some players to fall into that false sense of security that a 20- to 25-foot jumpshot is a good look.
“At halftime, I told the guys that they need to find a different mentality when they step inside the lines of the playing court,” Brown said. “We were not aggressive offensively and it showed.”
Led by Norman’s eight points in the quarter, Dryden used a 17-0 run to outscore the Blue Devils in the third, 20-12, to pull to within six points heading into the final period. The Lions took their first lead late in the quarter and, up 65-63 in the final minute, Powers got fouled as he drove to the basket and made both free throws to tie the game.
Dryden called a timeout with 30 seconds to play and drew up the game-winning play, which started with Norman coming off a screen against the Blue Devils zone and finding Ellis along the baseline for a easy layin.
“We had run that set several times during the game and had success with it,” Brown said. “It was nice to have success with it once again during a pressure-packed situation.”
Both teams called a timeout in the final seconds, and the game ended with a well-defended Benson finding Sam Allen along the right wing for a 3-pointer, which fell short. The ball was batted into the right corner as time expired.
“This is a good win for us,” Brown said. “We came off a difficult loss Friday (at 17th-ranked Lansing) in which we played very hard. Hopefully we can build some momentum as we head to the later part of the season.”
Dryden has a bye on Friday, while Moravia hosts Marathon.

Zones get some players to fall into that false sense of security that a 20-25 foot jumpshot is a good look. We shot as many two-points jumpshots as three-point jumpshot (12) in the first half." Moravia continued to make shots as Walker had 10 in the second quarter. "Down 43-29 at half, I told the guys that they need to find a different mentality when they step inside the lines of the playing court. We were not aggressive offensively and it showed." Dryden would outscore Moravia 20-12 in the third to cut the deficit to 6 headed into the fourth quarter. Norman with 8 in the quarter for Dryden. "We were attacking their zone and getting easy looks. It also helped when they went under some of our screens in the zone allowing us open looks from good spots on the floor." Dryden would take its first lead in the game late in the fourth quarter. "Again, we continued to run our stuff and get good looks. Defensively, we were solid and forced Moravia into difficult looks at times." "Gage did a great job defending Chandler in the fourth quarter." Benson had 2 points in the fourth quarter. "Gage did not get any help. He either forced Chandler to get rid of the ball or he made him take difficult, contested shots." With Dryden up 65-63 with under 1 minute to play thanks to 2 Shawn Moore free-throws, Dylan Powers would get fouled as he attacked the rim. Powers would make both free-throws to tie the score at 65. Dryden would call at timeout with 30 seconds to play. "I asked the guys what they were most comfortable with offensively. Trevor Gardner spoke up quickly, so we were prepared to run a set versus a zone or a man." "We attacked with 15 seconds on the clock and got exactly what we wanted. Bryan Norman came off a screen against their zone and found Gage Ellis along the baseline for a easy lay-in." "We had run that set several times during the game and had success with it. It was nice to have success with it once again during a pressure-packed situation." Moravia would inbounds the ball, cross the timeline and call a timeout. After both teams used timeouts to figure out what they other was attempting to run, it would come down to the final play. "When we saw Dylan was going to take the ball out-of-bounds, we figured a flare screen would be set for him and he would enter the ball to Chandler. Fortunately that is what happened and we defended it well." Sam Allen got a deep look from the right wing, but the shot did not make it to the rim. The ball would get batted to the right corner and the buzzer would sound. "This is a good win for us. We came off a difficult loss Friday in which we played very hard. Hopefully we can build some momentum and we head to the later part of the season. Eighth grader Trevor Gardner finished the game with 2 points, 7 assists, 2 rebounds and 0 turnovers. "Defensively Trevor was great tonight. He was an emotional leader for us on the defensive end in the second-half." "Bryan played an all-around great game tonight. He held Dylan Powers to 11, while leading us offensively."

Dryden improved to 7-4 overall and 7-3 in IAC play with a 67-65 win at previously unbeaten Moravia. Dryden was led by senior Bryan Norman who had a game-high 23 points, along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Senior Gage Ellis added 18 points, while freshman Ali Abel-Ferretti added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Moravai was led by Chase Walker who had 21 points, while Chandler Benson chipped in with 20 and Dylan Powers added 11. Moravia took a 21-16 lead after the first quarter. "We helped quite a bit on Benson and got beat. I wasn't disapponited who we allowed to get the looks, they just ahppened to make them." Walker with 7 in the quarter. "Offensively I thought we executed pretty well in the first quarter. We ran our sets and got easy looks for the most part." Norman with 7 in the first quarter and Abel-Ferretti with 6. Dryden would get outscored 22-13 in the second quarter. "We started to settle for jumpshots offensively and that hurt us. Zones get some players to fall into that false sense of security that a 20-25 foot jumpshot is a good look. We shot as many two-points jumpshots as three-point jumpshot (12) in the first half." From the Coach - JV Girls Basketball vs. Lansing 1/11
From DCS Website:
The girls lost a hard fought battle 28-23 Friday night against Lansing. We new it was going to be a physical game with both teams very aggressive on the defensive side. We came out and played a decent first quarter, but had a tough time against their zone in the second quarter. They did a nice job shutting down our big girls in the paint. We started forcing the ball which hurt us get anything going offensively. The score was 9-18 going into half-time. I told the girls we have been in this position before that there is alot of basketball left. We made some changes on the offensive side to counter against there defense taking away the paint. We came out and played an excellent third quarter outscoring them 10-2. We were seeing the zone much better and understanding where the ball had to go. We were able to take a three point lead with around 3:00 left in the game with a fast break steal by Bailey Rose. Lansing was able to hit a big three towards the end where the ball circled around the rim three times. Lansing was able to follow up with another offensive possession extended their lead by two. We had to start fouling late to give ourselves a chance at the end with 1:05 left in the game. Lansing was able to extend their lead to 3. With 1 minute left in the game we had a opportunity with a three point shot, but missed. We were able to make another stop and give ourselves another look, but were not able to convert. The girls played their hearts out in the second half and I'm very proud of the way we handle ourselves. They never got down on each other. The girls record is know 7-3. Lill Lynch led the team with 8pts and several block while Taylor Bennett added 6pts.

From DCS Website -
Dryden fell to 6-4 overall and 6-3 in IAC play with a 60-57 loss @ Lansing. Dryden was led by freshman Ali Abel-Ferretti who netted a career-high 17 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor and 3-4 from the F/T line. Dryden also got a career-high 15 points from Shawn Moore and 7 each from Bryan Norman and Bryant Stuttle. Lansing was led by Ellington Hopkins who had 17 points. Sam Currie and Nate McIntosh added 11 each. Lansing came out and took a 22-13 first-quarter lead. "They couldn't miss. We defended rather well and most everything they through up went in. One shot actually grazed the bottom of the rim, but the spin pulled it up on the rim and it fell in." "I was pleased with what we were doing offensively. We ran good sets and got good looks." Bryant Stuttle scored all 7 of his points in the first-quarter. Ellington Hopkins scored 11 in the first. The last, a buzzer-beater three-point shot to end the quarter. "Bryan defended him well during that possession. He actually got a piece of the ball and it still went in. It was that type of a shooting quarter for Lansing." "During the quarter break I told my guys that they would not continue to shoot like that. Their percentages will come back down to earth." The more important factor in the first-quarter was Dryden's leading scorer Gage Ellis picking up two quick fouls. "He deserved the first, but the second was awful." "When a desensive player stands with his fingertips pointing to the ceiling while he is not moving, he has earned that spot defensively. Too many times offensive players throw their bodies into the defender and are rewarded. That was the case here. I can say with rather certainty that our leading scorer, who is also a very athletic 6'5" player, scorers a few baskets in both the first and second quarter, while also affecting shot taken by our opponent. Instead, he sat for 14 of the first 16 minutes of the game." Dryden would get to within 2 points after trailing by 14 in the second quarter. "We ran our man sets well. Bruno Bugliosi and Shawn Moore shot the ball well." Moore led the Lions with 7 second-quarter points. Dryden would trail 32-28 at half. Lansing would outscore Dryden 19-12 in the third quarter to take a 51-40 lead into the fourth quarter. "We played hard in the third quarter, but not one thing went in our favor." Dryden would make the game interesting in the fourth as they climbed back from a double-digit deficit. "We had good possessions, scored efficiently and defended well." Dryden would utilize a full-court press and force Lansing to turn-it-over. Dryden would cut the deficit to three-points. With Dryden pressing the whistle would blow. The ref would give Dryden coach Kim Brown a timeout, however he never called for a timeout. "We were setting up our press and I make a diamond-shape with both of my hands. I never requested a timeout." That would mean Dryden would have no timeouts. With Dryden down 60-57 and in-possession of the ball, Norman would get stripped with 15 seconds left and Lansing would convert at the F/T line. "We played hard the entire night and fought for everything we got." Dryden JV's won 49-41.

From the Coach - JV Basketball vs. Groton - 01/08/2013
JV Girls Basketball vs. Groton 1/8
It
was a tough night offensively for the girls. Both teams struggled
finding points throughout the game. It was one of those nights where we
had some good opportunities, but the ball would not go in for us. We
definitely need to get back to the fundamentals. The girls had a
difficult time with making good passes and catching the ball.
One thing that we were able to do throughout the game is establish our
press. We did a great job staying discipline with our defense in return
created alot of possessions for us offensively. Offensively we need to
step it up to compete with a good Lansing team on Friday. Taylor Bennett
had 8 of the teams 22 pts. The girls improve their record to 7-2 on the
season.

From the Coach - JV Girls Basketball vs. Union Springs 1/5
The
JV Girls improved their record to 6-2 with a win against Union Springs.
The girls are riding a 5 game winning steak and hope to continue their
steak against Groton Tuesday night. We had a great 1st half against
Union Springs Friday night, scoring 16pts in the first quarter. Our
press defense slowed down their ability to move the ball up the floor,
allowing us to create turn-overs. Turn-overs are great defensively and
when you can create
points of turn-overs its a plus. We were able create points off
turn-overs in the first half which helped us set up our press defense.
The girls took a 27-6 lead at half-time. I told the girls that they
needed to come up with the same intensity that they had in the first
half, but it wasn't all too easy for them in the second half. I credit
Union Springs defense in the second half. They came out with
aggressiveness which caused us to turn the ball over. We needed to be
patient against their zone, but instead rushed our shots and forced the
ball into spots that were not open. Offensively we did not click in the
second half, but the girls stayed together never giving up on each
other. Our defense has been strong all year which helped us through the
game in the second half winning 33-20.

From Dryden Athletic Website:
Varsity Boys Basketball Cortland Tournament 12/28 & 12/29
Dryden improved to 4-2 overall and in IAC play with a 61-60 win over marathon at the cortland christmas tourney. Gage Ellis led Dryden with 20 points, while Bryan Norman chipped in with 14 points and Ali Abel-Ferretti added 11 points. Marathon got 27 points from Jeff Contri, 15 from Zach brandstadt and 11 from Kody Barry. "Defensively we were awful. Marathon played harder than us the entire game." Marathon would take a 23-18 lead after the first quarter. "We got off to a quick start, then got outplayed on both ends of the floor." With Dryden behind 60-58, they would use a timeout and draw up a set. "I was pretty sure we would still see a zone, so we werer pretty certain as to what we would do. The set was drawn up so Bryan would receive the ball in the paint off a pin-down screen, read the defense and play from there. Gage was where he was supposed to be, however Bryan was not available so we attacked Gage and he got a clean look from the corner. We were fortunate it went in." With Dryden up 61-60, they would use another timeout to set-up there defense. "We probably defended better on that possession than any other one." Kody Barry would have to force up a shot versus a double-team. The ball would get delected and Shawn Moore would gather the lose ball. "I'm glad we won, but we need consistency and leadership from this group or else we are going to be in tight games all year." Dryden plays Cortland in the title game. Dryden JV's beat Marathon by a score of 39-31. Noah Welgoss led Dryden with 16 points. Dryden JV's will also play Cortland in the title game.
