Dryden improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in division play as they defeated host Groton by a score of 81-58.
Dryden placed four
players in double-figures, led by junior Ali Abel-Ferretti who finished
with 21 points, on 9-13 from the field, while also collecting seven
rebounds.
Dryden also got 14 points and six assists from
sophomore Trevor Gardner, while junior Anthony Nichols added 11 points,
10 rebounds, six assists and two steals. This was Nichols' first ever
double-double.
Senior Noah Welgoss chipped in with 10 points and three steals.
Groton got 18 points from Canaan Bowie and 16 points from Andrew Ferris.
Both teams were knotted at 13 after the first quarter.
Dryden changed from a zone press to a man-to-man press in the second quarter, and it paid in dividends, as the Lions outscored Groton 25-12 in the second quarter.
"Our man press forced some Groton turnovers which we were able to convert into easy opportunities," said head coach Kim Brown. Welgoss had all 10 of his points in the quarter, while Matt McHerron added six points in the quarter.
"Noah has shot the ball very well the past few games," said Brown. "If he continues to play to his strength, he will be a major contributor for us this year."
Dryden outscored Groton 21-17 in the third quarter, as Abel-Ferretti netted 11 points.
"Ali was very active in the third quarter," said Brown. "He moved well in the post and demanded the ball on several possessions. I thought our pace offensively was good, however our overall team defense was not. Credit Groton, they played hard. We have to do a better job of recognizing scorers. We need to force scorers to give up the basketball. After forcing them to give up the basketball, we cannot allow them to have the basketball back in their hands. If our overall team defense does not improve, we will struggle."
Dryden JV's improved to 2-6 on the year as they defeated Groton 43-37. Freshman Wes Stahlman led Dryden with 14 points.
Dryden travels to Windsor today for a 5:30 JV tip.
