Taylor Bennett scored a pair of
second-half goals as Dryden High girls had their hands full during a big
road win in Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division soccer
action Tuesday.
Bennett scored the tying goal two minutes into second-half play to trigger a Purple Lions, that the first of five unanswered goals that secured a 6-2 victory over a tenacious host squad from Marathon.
In other IAC girls’ soccer matches, Union Springs shut out Moravia 2-0 and Elmira Notre Dame topped Tioga 9-0.
In IAC volleyball, Southern Cayuga stopped Groton 25-14, 20-25, 23-25, 25-9, 25-16; Lansing swept Dryden 25-22, 25-15, 25-21 and Moravia rallied to dump Union Springs 16-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-12.
In the South Division, Tioga blanked Watkins Glen 25-21, 25-23, 25-8 while Elmira Heights Edison swept Candor 25-11, 25-22, 25-13.
Dryden 6, Marathon 2: Dryden (2-0 division and overall) grabbed a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the match when Amy DeGaetano converted off a corner kick set. Marathon evened the score before halftime when Ashley Bush took advantage of a communication lapse between Dryden defenders. The Olympians (1-2) took a 2-1 lead 38 seconds into second half play as Drew Barber found the back of the net. Barber used her head off an Ellena Holl corner kick.
One minute later, Bennett got her first goal to even the score at 2-2 and the match stayed deadlocked until the final 20 minutes when the Purple Lions continued their scoring run. Ashley Tenkate, Leighann Bennett, Hannah Wildenstein and Taylor Bennett all tallied to make the final score 6-2 Dryden. Tenkate’s goal capped the 11-minute burst that concluded with nine minutes to play.
Cindy Courtney made 12 saves in the Olympian goal. Alissa Patte was credited with nine saves for Dryden.
Dryden will play its first North Large School Division match Thursday as the Purple Lions host Trumansburg at 4:30 p.m. Marathon will host Groton in North Small School Division action Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
IN IAC VOLLEYBALL —
Lansing 3, Dryden 0: Dryden battled hard, but gave up short in its North Large School battle at Lansing. The Purple Lions (1-1 league and overall) were close in the first and third sets.
The Simonet led Dryden with eight service points, six aces, six kills, six blocks and five digs. Lexi Cooper added nine points, six digs, five aces and four assists while Steph Parker contributed five kills, three assists and two digs.
Keara Lowenhar paced Lansing with 20 points, 11 aces and two kills. Hannah Armstrong added 26 assists, seven kills and four aces with Shalyn Watson having 20 assists, seven points, five aces and three kills.
Southern Cayuga 3, Groton 2: After losing the first set 25-14, Groton came back with two hard-fought set wins at 25-20, 25-23. Southern Cayuga regained its composure and won the crucial fourth set 25-9 before winning the match 25-16 in the final set.
Kylene Hall led Groton with 10 blocks and eight kills. Tiffany James chipped in with four assists and two aces.
Groton will return to IAC action Sept. 11 at Trumansburg.
Moravia 3, Union Springs 2: The Blue Devils improved to 1-2 in dramatic fashion, as 25 assists by setter Mattea Hilliard and eight kills by Terri McKinney led the comeback. Courtney Crossgrove had six kilsl and 19 digs for the winners.
Mikaila Nelson topped Union Springs with five kills.
