Olympians shut
down Lions, 2-0

Solid defense and two timely second half goals led to a big soccer win for Marathon Central boys Wednesday.
The Olympians held a high-powered Dryden High attack to just four shots as Jeff Contri and Ryan Tillotson netted goals during a 2-0 Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division victory for the visitors.
Both teams are 2-1 in division and overall play after the match,
Elsewhere in the IAC, Trumansburg topped Groton 3-1 and Elmira Notre Dame tripped Tioga 2-1.
Marathon 2, Dryden 0: “We’re getting there,” Marathon coach Chip Stewart said after the crucial early-season road win. “It wasn’t spectacular, but it was a good win.
“We picked our spots when it came to possessing the ball,” he added. “We did panic in the box at times. Giving up six corners was not good, but we overcame that.”
The game was played between the 18s most of the match. The Olympians would hold a slight 7-4 edge in shots, but the visitors only had four cornerkicks.
“Dryden did control the ball well and strung passes together in the midfield,” Stewart said. “They just could not hit the enter pass into the box. Tyler Hollerer and Cody Barry played very well for us and helped prevent that.”
“Our ball possession was very good for most of the game,” Dryden coach Laszlo Engel said. “Marathon defended very well as we could not find the space to shoot. We were dangerous many times, but we were unable to get a quality shot off as their defense went hard to the ball and did well closing us down. We certainly learned a couple things that we can work on.”
After a scoreless first half, the Olympians took advantage of a pair of unsettled situations in the Dryden box. The first came midway in the half when Jeff Contri recovered a loose ball and fired by Purple Lion goalkeeper Haile Cutter (4 saves). It was a similar play three minutes later that gave Marathon a two-goal advantage. This time, Ryan Tillotson got the ball and delivered it into the back of the net. It was Tillotson’s first varsity goal.
“I told the guys that it was 0-0 at the half,” Stewart said. “I told them games like this come down to a key restart or a loose ball. That certainly did happen today.”
Marathon goalkeeper Kyle Young recorded two saves to earn the clean sheet.
Marathon will return to North Small School Division competition Friday. The Olympians will travel to Groton for a 4:30 p.m. match.
Dryden will head to Trumansburg for North Large School Division play Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Trumansburg 3, Groton 1: Will Stoughton notched a second-half goal, but it was the only tally for Groton as the visiting Indians dropped a 3-1 North Division decision at Trumansburg.
“We really played hard with just 12 guys,” Groton coach John D’Antonio said. “We were close, but just got tired in the end.
“Nate Cotterill and Joel Twitchell had really good defensive efforts,” he added. “Alec Young played a solid game in goal.”
The Blue Raiders (2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Josiah Peck scored the lone goal in the first 40 minutes.
Stoughton tied the game at 1-1 with 21 minutes left on a nice shot from the left corner of the box and stuck the ball in the upper 90 of the goal. It was Stoughton’s first varsity goal of his career with Tim Bexendell assisting.
With 12 minutes left, Trumansburg took the lead for good as Kevin Pritts found an opening and scored. Mark Cooley gave the Blue Raiders an insurance goal with two minutes to go. Assists were dished out by Abreham Kittel, Kyle Carr and Gabe Dell’Accio.
Young finished with nine saves in the Indians (0-2). Seamus Henehan made three saves for the Blue Raiders.
