Oneonta Star
STAFF REPORT
Peter Paluch’s goal 15 minutes into the second
half snapped a 1-all tie and second-seeded Oneonta High went on to a 3-1
victory over visiting Dryden on Saturday to advance to the Section Four
Class B boys soccer final for the fifth straight year.
Paluch headed in a throw-in from Kragh Delello.
“He’s
not the tallest guy, but he challenged for it,” OHS coach Alex Brannan
said of Paluch’s goal from 12 yards. “I said, ‘Boy, you really climbed
the ladder there.’”
The Yellowjackets (12-4) will play
fourth-seeded Chenango Forks (9-7) in the final Saturday at the Wright
National Soccer Campus. OHS is looking for its third sectional title in
five years. Forks upset second-seeded Susquehanna Valley, 1-0, in
overtime Saturday.
Jacob Czapranski scored on a free kick to give the Lions a 1-0 lead 2:12 into play.
Theo Malone tied the score for OHS 12 minutes later.
Ian Oliver capped the scoring with 10 minutes left, one-timing a pass from Delello.
“That
took a pressure off with 10 minutes to go,” said Brannan, whose team
has played Susquehanna Valley in the last two sectional finals, winning,
3-2, in 2011 and dropping a 5-2 decision last season.
Added
Brannan: “It was an aggressive game, more aggressive than we’ve ever had
against them. We composed ourselves. We gave up another early goal, but
that was a mistake in the back that we talked about. It wasn’t that we
weren’t ready to play.”
The Yellowjackets split two games against Forks, winning at home, 2-1, early in the season and falling, 3-1, at Forks.
“The
first time we played them it was the second game of the season and
other time was on turf,” Brannan said. “The bottom line is whoever comes
to play will win it. We can’t give up early goals and then fight back.
As you get deeper and deeper in the sectionals, good teams usually don’t
give up leads. It’s good that we’re at home. We’ve won every game at
home.”
On making it to the sectional final for the fifth straight
year, Brannan said: “It’s pretty impressive when you think about it,
because you’re changing players every year.”
Unfortunately this article does not go into the detail of the poor officiating that led to what the Oneonta Coach called aggressive play. Officiating was poor both ways but more so in their favor. Apathetic officiating in the first half led to all out chaos in the second - they boys played well enough to beat the team but not the officiating. Was not Sectional Semi-final quality officiating.

Dryden rallies past Marathon
Cortland Standard
MARATHON — Jake Czapranski and Tor Wildenstein scored second half goals nine minutes apart to help Dryden High overcome a 1-0 deficit and post a 2-1 victory over Marathon Central in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division regular season soccer finale for both teams.
Dryden wraps up the regular season at 12-3. Marathon closes the books at 11-4 heading into post-season play.
Marathon took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute of play. Zack Brandstadt got the ball to Dan Lincoln off a corner kick. Lincoln found a hole and poke the ball into the goal for the Olympians.
“We played a very good first half,” Marathon coach Chip Stewart said. “We got the ball deep a number of times, but did not take the shot. That was the difference because Dryden pulled the trigger on shots while we looked for the perfect shot.”
Dryden got the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. Mike Harvey laid the ball off to Czapranski for the finish. With 21 minutes to to, Czapranski delivered a corner kick into the box. Wildenstein received the ball and drove it home for the lead.
“That was what we needed,” Dryden coach Laszlo Engel said about Wildenstein’s game-winner. “We took care of the ball and held the lead for the win during the last 21 minutes. It was an exciting and intense game all afternoon. Both teams had their times of danger.
“I liked our work effort today and our ball management to earn the win,” he added. “Marathon worked hard to get their goal in the first half. It was a very nice goal.”
“I was disappointed that we didn’t handle the intensity in the second half,” Stewart said. “It really was a well played game by by both teams.”
Goalie Kyle Young kept Marathon in the hunt with six saves. Haile Cutter recorded two saves for Dryden.
Marathon will now prepare for the IAC Overall Small School Championship match Friday. The North Division Champion Olympians will meet Spencer-Van Etten at 8 p.m. on the Tompkins Cortland Community College turf.
Marathon girls will play the 6 p.m. game Friday as the Lady Olympian also meet Spencer-Van Etten for the Overall Small School title match at TC3.
THE IAC LARGE SCHOOL Overall Championship matches are set for Saturday at TC3. North Champion Lansing and South Division champion Elmira Notre Dame will meet in the girls’ title game at 6 p.m. The Bobcat and Crusader boys will then square off in the 8 p.m. championship match.

Sectional Bracketology
From Ithaca.com
By Jesse Disbrow
By Jesse Disbrow
Bracketology. It’s a term that is most often heard around the
NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, but it can be co-opted for anytime a
bracket is produced.
Take for example, boys’ soccer. All the regular season games will be over by Tuesday, and a seeding meeting will be held during the week. Who will be the top seed in each bracket? Where will your favorite team be? Trying to figure that all out is called bracketology.
It’s hard to imagine that Lansing won’t be a number one seed. They’ve shown some vulnerability, but they still are the class of Class C. However, some of our other Class C programs will have a shot at top seeds. Trumansburg, who handed Lansing their only loss this season, and Spencer-Van Etten, who will once again head to TC3 this weekend as the IAC Small South champ, should host a playoff game and may end up among the top five seeded teams.
Dryden is our coverage area’s only Class B school, but they should be in line for a first round bye.
Newfield’s team should also join the brackets this year, but they will likely have to hit the road in their first match. Candor will also be a part of a bracket, though they’ll end up in the Class D bracket. The Romulus/South Seneca boys are an interesting team to consider for brackets. They’ll likely end up towards the bottom of their bracket, but they had a stronger season than their record portrays. They could be one of those teams that travels to a higher seed and upsets them.
For the girls, Candor will play in the sectional this year, having qualified after a season that saw some key victories. The Spencer-Van Etten girls earned their second straight IAC Small School South Division title and that should be enough to earn them a top five seed. Furthermore, they got some big wins against the more powerful teams in Class C, so they may also end up with a first round bye and then a home game.
Newfield had a very solid season, but may have fallen just outside of the brackets. A late season win could be all the difference. The Groton girls may be in the same boat.
South Seneca should definitely earn a playoff spot. In fact they may be looking at a home game when the Section 5 tournament begins on October 22. They are currently fifth in sectional points, and a win against rival Romulus on Friday could help keep them there.
The Lansing and Dryden girls should both get into their brackets easily, with both looking at spots near the top.
We’ll also get field hockey brackets soon, and we’ll get a look at the volleyball playoffs soon enough as well, though those are not a traditional bracket.

Lansng vs Dryden - Girls Soccer - From the Coach
Varsity girls soccer: 10/15 - Lansing
defeated Dryden by a score of 2-0 to clinch the large school north
division. lansing finishes the season with a 14-0 IAC record and will
play on Saturday at TC3 forthe IAC large school championship. The game
was 0-0 at half time. lansing netted a goal early in the second half
when Kristin Dake finished from the left flank. Dryden had a few chances
throughout but was unable to capitalize. Lansing sealed the deal with
ten minutes remaining with an Elena Parkins goal. The game was a typical
Dryden Lansing game. " I knew my team could hang with Lansing for 40
minutes, even 60 minutes, but with the depth they have and the ability
to rest their kids to keep them fresh and the young small team I have
with the inability to rest my kids is a huge disadvantage to us. being
able to hang in at that strength and speed is only something that will
come with my 8th graders becoming 9 the graders or 10th graders" " I am
proud of the way we played, the heart and the commitment to fight hard
to the end is a testament to what the future Dryden soccer has ahead of
them"

Lansing v Dryden - Boys Soccer - From the Coach
Varsity boys soccer 10/11 - Dryden
0, Lansing 2 - This was a very intense game. We played very well
especially in the first half but did not finish our chances. Lansing
finished 2 chances on two shots in the second half. They do a good job
of being opportunistic. We have had some difficulties doing that. Our
passing game was very good as was our possession. This was a very
exciting and fast passed High School soccer game. Very entertaining. We
will now focus on sectionals.

He stands at 57 goals, equaling the mark set in 1981 by Barth Gardner. Kittel will have a chance to break the record in T-burg’s next game, Wednesday night at No. 1-ranked Lansing.
A minute after Kittel’s second goal, Dryden (9-2) cut the deficit to one on a goal by Timothy Lewis on a feed from Mike Harvey, but the home team could not get the equalizer. The Blue Raiders had a slim edge in shots (11-10) and the Purple Lions had the edge in corners (5-3).
Seamus Henehan made six saves for Trumansburg, while Haile Cutter stopped five shots for the Purple Lions, who will take on Union Springs at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Newark Valley 3, Candor 2: Tyler Rypkema broke a 2-all tie with 11 minutes to play, lifting the Cardinals. Philip Lindhorst and Chad Goodrich also scored for NV, while Jake Van Scoy and Adam Nichols had the Candor goals.
