From the Coach - Dryden Boys over Marathon

Varsity/JV Boys Basketball @ Marathon
12/12/14

The Dryden boys varsity basketball team earned their first victory of the year as they defeated host Marathon by a score of 70-58.  Junior, Ali Abel-Ferretti, led Dryden with 22 points and 10 rebounds on 8-11 shooting, while also going 6-6 from the free-throw line.  Sophomore Trevor Gardner chipped in with 14 points and 6 assists, while junior Stu Stahlman added 12 points and 6 rebounds.  Marathon junior Ryan Tillotson led all scorers with 28 points, as he connected on seven 3-point field goals.  Marathon led 19-17 after one quarter.  "I thought we might come out a little sluggish as we had not practiced the last three days due to after-school activities being cancelled, along with a snow day."  "We settled for too many deep jump shots, and failed to defend the basketball well."  Anthony Nichols scored 7 in the second quarter for Dryden, while Tillotson had 7 in the quarter for Marathon.  Dryden would take a 36-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.  "We did a much better job getting Ali touches in the second quarter."  Abel-Ferretti scored 9 points in the third quarter.  "Kyle Burvee and Matt McHerron gave us great minutes in the first half.  Kyle accounted for seven points, while Matt made great decisions with the basketball which resulted in easy looks."  Dryden would stretch the lead to double-digits, however Marathon would continue to play hard.  "We could never get the lead to extend past eleven points, and that was due to timely shooting by Marathon."  "The Tillotson kid shoots the ball very well.  I was even more impressed with the way he hustled back on defense and never once celebrated his made shots.  Humble players are a rarity in today's game."
"Trevor Gardner would make five of six free-throws late in the game to secure the victory."  "Marathon is a difficult place to play and I'm pleased we left with a win, however we have a lot to work on."  Dryden is at Whitney Point Tuesday.  Dryden JV's won 49-34 to earn their first win of the year.  Freshman Wes Stahlman led Dryden with 21 points.
