Despite Abel-Ferretti's 26 Lions fall to Whitney Point
Whitney Point 69, Dryden 51: At Whitney Point, the Purple
Lions fell to 1-2 on the season despite getting a game-high 26 points
from 6-6 junior Ali Abel-Ferretti. Stu Stahlman chipped in 10 points and
Trevor Gardner had nine.
Whitney Point (4-0) got 20 points and 14 rebounds from Gabe Shrauger, and 18 points from Brady Harrington. The winners shot 27-of-53 (51 pct.) from the floor.
The Golden Eagles led 38-15 at halftime and stretched the advantage to 61-30 after three quarters. Shrauger had eight of his points in the first period to help the home team get out to a fast start.
Dryden hosts Southern Cayuga on Friday, beginning with the JV game at 6 p.m.

Lady Lions drop a tough one at Buzzer vs Whitney Point
Whitney Point 48, Dryden 46: At Dryden, Jessica Cafferty hit a
layup as the buzzer sounded to lift the Golden Eagles past the Purple
Lions in a closely played game.
Cafferty finished with a game-high 24 points and teammate Brittany Randall added 16 points for WP. Dryden, which led by three points at halftime, was led by Lindsey Goodenough’s 16 points and Erin Daley’s 12.

Dryden fell to 1-2 on
the year as they lost to host Whitney Point 69-51. Ali Abel-Ferretti led
all scorers with 26 points. Dryden also got 10 points from Stu Stahlman
and 9 points from Trevor Gardner. Whitney Point got 20 points from Gabe
Shrauger and 18 points from Brady Harrington. Dryden trailed 18-6 after
one quarter. "We've started slow in every game this year. We
got great looks in the paint, we just didn't convert." Meanwhile, WP
had no problem scoring. Dryden would trail 38-15 at half as they were
outscored 20-9 in the second quarter. "We didn't do many things well
in the second quarter. We need to get more production from the off-guard
position, yet it hasn't happened thus far." "Credit Whitney
Point, they shot the ball very well tonight and were extremely efficient
offensively." Dryden would play better in the second half but it was
too little, too late. Abel-Ferretti scored 20 points in the second
half. "Ali, Stu and Trevor are providing solid production for us;
however we need others to fulfill roles if we are to be successful this
year." Dryden JV's fell to 1-2 on the year as they lost 49-29.
Nick Hollister led Dryden with 10 points. Dryden hosts Southern Cayuga
this Friday, 6pm JV start.

Purple Lions perk up to top host Olympians

After falling behind host Marathon Central boys 19-17 after the opening
quarter, Dryden High coach Kim Brown directed his Purple Lions to get
the ball inside to their big men.
Ali Abel-Ferretti scored nine of his team’s 19 points during second-quarter play, while the 6-foot-6 center and 6-foot-4 Stu Stahlman netted 14 of the team’s 16 third-quarter points as the Purple Lions pulled away for a 70-58 Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division victory over the host Olympians Friday in McDonald Gymnasium.
Abel-Ferretti finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds in Dryden’s first win of the season. Stahlman added 12 and six rebounds with Trevor Gardner netting 14 points for the Purple Lions (1-1 overall).
“I thought we might come out a little sluggish as we had not practiced the last three days due to after-school activities being cancelled, along with a snow day,” Brown said of the slow first quarter start. “We settled for too many deep jump shots and failed to defend the basketball well.
“We did a much better job getting Ali touches in the second quarter,” he continued. “Kyle Burvee and Matt McHerron gave us great minutes in the first half. Kyle accounted for seven points, while Matt made great decisions with the basketball which resulted in easy looks.”
“Ali did a great job in the post,” Marathon coach Jim Holland stated. “They fed him the ball well and he got some nice put backs. He really was the difference in the game along with Stahlman.”
Dryden turned that two-point deficit into a 52-47 lead through three quarters and pulled away some more in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Tillotson kept Marathon (1-2) in the contest with 28 points, including seven 3-pointers. Matt Tebbe added 12 points to the Olympians’ cause.
“Ryan did keep us in the game for three quarters,” Holland said. “Of course, we missed six uncontested lay-ups and we lost by 12 points.”
“We could never get the lead to extend past eleven points and that was due to timely shooting by Marathon,” Brown added “The Tillotson kid shoots the ball very well. I was even more impressed with the way he hustled back on defense and never once celebrated his made shots. Humble players are a rarity in today’s game.”
Gardner would make five of six free throws late in the game to secure the victory.
Dryden will face a stiff test Tuesday as the Purple Lions travel to Whitney Point for a big North Large School showdown. Marathon will hit the road as well with a trip to Southern Cayuga.
In other IAC North outings last night, Moravia was a 61-40 winner over Lansing while Trumansburg got the best of Southern Cayuga 42-38.

Dryden 40, Marathon 27: After holding a 17-16 halftime lead, Dryden High outscored visiting Marathon 23-11 in the second halftime to pull away for the win.
The Purple Lions led 26-20 through three quarters before a 14-7 advantage in the final quarter doubled the scoring gap between the two teams.
Maggie Cole led the Purple Lions with nine points. Keri Daley added eight points and Erin Daley netted seven points for the winners.
Megan Contri topped the Marathon scoring list with nine points. Cassidy Marsh chipped in with eight points.
Dryden will host Whitney Point in IAC action Tuesday while Marathon will entertain Southern Cayuga.

The Dryden boys varsity
basketball team earned their first victory of the year as they defeated host
Marathon by a score of 70-58. Junior,
Ali Abel-Ferretti, led Dryden with 22 points and 10 rebounds on 8-11 shooting,
while also going 6-6 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Trevor Gardner chipped in with 14 points and 6 assists, while
junior Stu Stahlman added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Marathon junior Ryan Tillotson led all
scorers with 28 points, as he connected on seven 3-point field goals. Marathon led 19-17 after one quarter. "I thought we might come out a little
