ITHACA — Several local indoor track athletes earned
berths in the upcoming state championships with their performances at
the Section 4 state qualifier Saturday at Cornell’s Barton Hall, site of
the state meet.
Dryden High senior Rachel
Hutchinson took first in the girls’ 1,000 meters, in a personal-best
and school-record time of 2 minutes, 57.32 seconds. Hutchinson, ranked
among the nation’s leaders in the 1,000 this season, also placed second
in the girls’ 1,500 meters in 5:09.23 but she will compete in just the
1,000 at states. Hutchinson was named girls’ track MVP for the meet.
Also advancing to states from Dryden were Abbey Yatsko, MacKenzie Todd and Will Holt. Yatsko broke the school record in the 300 meters, winning the event in a time of 41.53 seconds. She finished 1.6 seconds ahead of runner-up Emily Stiker of Corning.
Yatsko
also qualified in the 55-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.56,
taking second in the event to Notre Dame’s Brittany Schutrum (7.33).
Todd
finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 71/4 inches,
and earned a trip to states. And Holt placed second in the finals of the
boys’ 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.15 seconds, earning him his
second trip to states.
Lansing’s
Ben Eisenhut qualified for states in the boys’ 1,000 meters, finishing
second in a time of 2.35.99, while Trumansburg’s Tyler Sutherland
qualified with a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters (9:41.48).
Lansing

Hayley Wigsten qualified second with a height of 9 feet, while the
Bobcats swept the boys’ competition, Dylan Bland (13-0) and Max Jordan
(12-6) taking 1-2.
The state meet is slated for this Saturday at Cornell.

From the Coach - Dryden Section IV Playoffs
Var Boys Basketball vs Chenango Valley, 2/20
Last night Dryden season finished with a 66-60 loss at Chenango Valley. Dryden finished the season at 12-6. Dryden was led by Gage Ellis who had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Bryan Norman added 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Ali Abel-Ferretti chipped in with a double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dryden led 12-7 after the first quarter. Norman with 6 and Ellis with 4. "We led after the first quarter, but we missed several shots within 10 feet. I felt as though we left 8-10 points on the floor after the first quarter. You have to convert when you are close to the rim and we did not in the first quarter." Dryden would lead 25-24 at the half. CV would outscore Dryden 23-14 in the third quarter. "We struggled getting the ball inbounds at times after they scored. We simply needed to put more pace on the ball and we didn't." Dryden would outscore CV 21-19 in the fourth but it was too late. "I thought we played well for most of the game, and provided plenty of help defensively. It would have been nice to have the opportunity to score when the clock wasn't moving." CV would attempt 30 free-throws, Dryden would attempt 14. "This group have been an absolute pleasure to coach. They were the first group to commit to the program allowing us to attend team camps and fall leagues. With them leaving, we will need a new leader to move this group forward.

Sectional Basketball Previews for 2/20

Class B Boys First Round
Games at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
No. 6 Dryden at No. 3 Chenango Valley
In a lower bracket, the Lions would have had a home game, however, as a Class B team Dryden will head out to Chenango Valley on Wednesday. The team had a strong season and a win over potential sectional champion Moravia earlier in the year is proof that this team can beat anyone. Bryan Norman is the lead dog on this offense, but the team will likely need to turn to others as well to have success in the sectional tournament. The one nice thing about the smaller tournament size is that Dryden is only two wins from the finals.
Class C Boys First Round
Games at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
No. 6 Lansing hosts No. 11 Bainbridge-Guilford
Lansing narrowly missed out on a division championship and will have had a week’s worth of practice in hand when they take back to the court. The Bobcats’ second half of the season wasn’t as impressive as their first half, but they were still a strong team that can play with any team in the Class C Bracket.
No. 9 Spencer-Van Etten at No. 8 Odessa-Montour
Thanks to a good run at the end of the season, Spencer-Van Etten pulled the seed immediately below the champions of their shared IAC South Small School Division, Odessa-Montour. Spencer-Van Etten matches up fairly well with O-M and the Panthers will do all they can to pull off the slight upset.
No. 12 Newfield at No. 4 Greene
Newfield had a tough stretch of games to close the season and this game should be just as tough. It will be interesting to see if this scrappy Trojans team has become battle hardened from that stretch. In any case, the fact that neither team is familiar with the other could be a help or hindrance to either team.

IAC Girls's Basketball All Stars Announced
By Jesse Disbrow
| Ithaca Times
It’s that time of year again. Time to hand out post season awards. The IAC has picked their girls basketball all stars and one of the division MVPs was a little surprising.
Well, it’s not surprising taking into account how
impressive Shea McCartney was while leading the Lansing Ladycats to an
undefeated season in the IAC. The surprising thing is that she’s only a
sophomore. McCartney averaged 17.7 points per game this season and
should be the anchor of good Lansing teams for years to come. Teammates
Audrey Eastman and twin sister Maura McCartney were both named to the
first team, while Liz Gonyea and Brittney Mikula both earned second team
nominations in the IAC North Large Division.
Anna Shelley and Megan McIntyre represent the Trumansburg girls on the first team and Kate Holland was named to the second team for Dryden.
In the North Small School Division, Groton’s Ruthanne Forehand won the MVP honors. Her teammates Steffanie Preston and Kylene Hall were both named to the North Small first team.
In the South Small Division, Callie Patsellis was named the MVP. Newfield’s first team representatives were Erica Carney and Rebecca Wood, while Megan Pakkala and Lindsey Wood were named to the second team. Candor earned a spot on the first team in the form of Sierra Szwec.
The playoffs are a busy time. All the sports come to an end at right about the same time. It can make for some hectic scheduling and can make getting all the events covered tough on a small newspaper staff. If you are a coach or scorekeeper please send in results to us. If you are a fan feel free to tweet the score @FLCNSports. If you haven’t seen us report it or seen us retweet someone’s report just jump right in and help out.
We’ll have some photos from games this week up on our website as soon as possible, as well as score reporting and any tidbits of note. Expect full stories either on the web at our website Ithaca.com or printed in our weekly edition.
As for the teams playing for postseason glory my money would be on the Lansing girls’ basketball team. They could be joining the Trumansburg boys’ track and field team as winter season sectional champions this year. However, there are match up issues a savvy team with the right personnel could exploit, and I wonder if that team could be Newfield. If Newfield can get business done at home against Greene in the first round, it could be a great game next Friday in Lansing.
Another pair of darkhorse basketball teams to watch are the Dryden boys in Class B and the Spencer-Van Etten boys in Class C. Both put together some big wins during the season and could surprise a few teams. In the case of Dryden in a shortened bracket all they’d need to do is surprise a few teams.

From the Coach - IAC JV Boys Basketball Championship
JV Boys Basketball vs Waverly 2/13
Last night Dryden fell to host Waverly in the IAC Large North Champiosnhip 61-51. Dryden was led by freshmen Matt McHerron who had 17 points on 8/12 from the floor, while also collecting 4 rebounds, 3 asists and 2 steals. Noah Welgoss added 10 points, Thad LeViere 8 and Stu Stahlman 7 points and 15 rebounds. Dryden would dig themselves a deep first-quarter hole, but a defensive change would allow the purple lions to eliminate that deficit and take the lead late in the second quarter. After a couple Waverly field goals late in the second quarter, Waverly would lead 31-28 at the half. Waverly would outscore Dryden 18-7 in the third quarter to take a commanding 14-point lead headed into the final quarter.

IAC boys basketball all-stars - Ithaca Journal
02/14/2013 - Ithaca Journal
ITHACA — At 6-foot-5 and about 220 pounds, Whitney Point senior Adam Tillotson is a sizeable presence on the basketball court for the Whitney Point Eagles.
But it’s the fact that he’s a smaller presence from last year, by about 20 pounds, that helped him become the force he is in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large School North Division.
“It really helped him be more versatile, and play more minutes,” Whitney Point coach Steve Morgan said Wednesday, referring to Tillotson’s improved physical condition. “He’s also been able to increase his shooting range. He’s always got the ball in his hands, he draws a lot of attention.”
And why not? The senior scored nearly 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds per outing, and has led the Eagles (15-2) into Thursday night’s IAC Large School title game against Watkins Glen (14-2). Tillotson on Tuesday was named the IAC Large North Division Most Valuable Player and earned a spot on the all-star first team for a third straight season.
Moravia’s Dylan Powers was named the Small North Division MVP; in the IAC South, Elmira Notre Dame sophomore Darius Garvin (Large School) and Tom Peckham of Odessa-Montour and Derek Carman of Spencer-Van Etten (Small School) South MVP honors.
Tillotson was joined on the Large North All-Star first team by teammate Austin Standish-Warpus, Lansing’s Ellington Hopkins and Ben Rourke, and Dryden teammates Bryan Norman and Gage Ellis. Nick Stevens, Zach Marsh and Chris Ellerson of WP made the second team, along with Lansing’s Nate McIntosh and Dryden’s Ali Abel-Ferretti.

From the Coach - JV Grils Basketball Vs. Union Springs
JV Girls Basketball vs. Union Springs 2/11
Congratulations
to the JV Girls Basketball team for an outstanding season. The girls
finished up their regular season with a win over Union Springs 26-16 to
improve to 10-6 on their 2012-2013 campaign. Every girl on our squad
improved in one way or another and that is what you want as a coach. It
is not easy for a team to adjust to a new coach in the program, but I
thought the girls showed respect for me. They believed in what was being
asked of them and
they competed as a team. If they continue to work hard off season this
is going to be a fun group to watch in the future. It was a pleasure to
coach this team and I look forward to the upcoming years.

From the coach - Dryden JVGBB v Trumansburg
JV Girls Basketball vs. Trumansburg 2/5
The
JV girls improved to 9-6 on the season with a win over Trumansburg
30-24. We did not play good basketball in the first half. The girls
lacked intensity and the abilty to take care of the ball. I thought are
defense was good in the first half, but it seemed like the girls enjoyed
passing the ball to the other team. Too many turn-overs and the
williness to be assertive attacking the basket really hurt us. In the
second half we looked like a totally
different basketball team. We started putting pressure on their guards
which helped create some turn-overs. Offensively we were able to settle
down and work the ball around and find some easy shots. The girls scored
28 of their 30 points in the second half. Lill Lynch led the team with
10pts and Taylor Bennet, Emily DeLucia and Bailey Rose each had 6pts.
The girls wrap up their season away Friday against Union Springs.
Frm the Coach - Indoor Track Class Championships
Varsity Indoor Track Class Championships 2/1
Dryden
place winners: Girls win the Class C/D meet and the boys placed 3rd.
What a night, I am so pleased with the way the kids competed tonight.
The girls know they are a talented group of individuals and they wanted
to make a statement that they are one of the best teams that the Dryden
Track Program has had. They did indeed, bringing home
a 10th sectional title for the track program, (1st indoor title). We had
a total of 16 personal best's on the night. The girls wanted to
dominate the meet and they did, doubling up 2nd place Waverly 136 - 68.
It was amazing watching the kids compete, we didn't have a single slip
up. With only 9 boys competing I am very happy with a top 3 finish.

a 34-15 lead into the locker room at half. Dryden would outscore T'burg
17-7 in the third quarter and 21-18 in the fourth quarter. Shawn Moore
with all 12 of his points in the second half. "Shawn got good looks in
the first-half, however he was too deliberate when he shot the ball.
Before the start of the second-half, I told him to shoot at gamespeed."
Moore would go 3/5 from three-point range in the second-half after
going 0-2 in the first-half. Dryden
JV's lost to Trumansburg 58-51. Matt McHerron led Dryden with 13
points. Dryden hosts Union Springs Friday, the final game of the
regular-season. JV tip is at 5:30 to accomodate senior recognition
before the varsity game.
From the Coach - JV Girls v Whitney Point
JV Girls Basketball vs. Whitney Point 2/1
The JV Girls improved to 8-6 on the season defeating Whitney Point in a close game 30-28. It was a tight game with both teams battling back in forth. We were able to make some outside shots which in hand settled are girls down and gave them some confidence. The ability to shoot from the permiter has hurt us all year, but our girls know that shooting is very important when it comes to winning. We were much balanced on offense throughout the night. We had several girls who stepped up and played some good minutes for us. Overall it was an important win and a nice win for our girls going into the final two games of the season. Very proud of our girls! Mackenzie Weaver scored a season high 8pts and Emily Delucia, Maggie Cole and Kenyatta Allen each had 6pts.

Whitney Point, Lansing basketball teams battling for top spot in IAC Large North
From Ithaca Journal 02/01/2013
ITHACA — With just three games left in the regular season, Whitney Point and Lansing are in a dogfight atop the Interscholastic Athletic Conference Large North Division, with red-hot Dryden not far behind.
The results of Friday night’s intra-division matchups might have a say in who ultimately advances to the Large School final, slated for 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The Eagles (12-2, 11-2 IAC, 3-1 division) are a half-game ahead of the Bobcats (11-2, 10-2, 3-1) in the overall standings, and face a stiff test tonight against visiting Dryden.
The Purple Lions (10-4, 10-3, 2-2) are coming off a 45-point drubbing of Southern Cayuga and have won four straight and nine of their last 10, including a 67-65 defeat of previously unbeaten Moravia on Jan. 15.
Lansing heads around the lake to take on traditional rival Trumansburg (0-15, 0-4 division), which is coming off a 47-26 loss on Wednesday to Newark Valley in the rescheduled consolation game of the Fred Caliel Tournament. The Cardinals were led by Ryan Coleman’s 17 points, while Zachary Kenney had seven for the Blue Raiders, who’ve been held to 40 points or fewer eight times this season.
Elsewhere in the IAC North, it’s Groton (4-9, 2-4 Small North) at Moravia (11-2, 6-0), which has clinched the Small North Division, and Southern Cayuga (6-7, 2-3) at Union Springs (4-10, 1-5).
In the South, a key Large School clash will pit Notre Dame (13-1, 9-0 IAC, 3-0 Large South) against host Watkins Glen (11-2, 8-1, 3-1). Other contests feature Waverly (10-4) at Newark Valley (2-11), Edison (4-10) at Newfield (7-7, 6-2 Small South), Tioga (0-13) at Odessa-Montour (11-3, 8-0 Small South) and Spencer-Van Etten (7-6) at Candor (3-10).
