Hutchinson finishes 8th in 1,000

ITHACA — Rachel Hutchinson finished eighth in the girls’ 1,000 meters to highlight area athletes’ showings at Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track championships, at Cornell’s Barton Hall.
Hutchinson, seeded 11th in the event, challenged for the lead during the early portion of the race before fading in the last two laps of the five-lap race. She finished in 2 minutes, 57.75 seconds, just slightly off her seed time of 2:57.32. Leah Triller of Holy Names (Section 2) won the race in 2:53.39.
Freshman Abbey Yatsko competed in two events for the Purple Lions, placing 18th in the 300 meters (42.21 seconds) and 29th in the 55-meter dash (7.62). She was eliminated in the preliminary heats in both races.
Also for the Dryden girls, Mackenzie Todd was 21st in the long jump (15 feet, 8 inches), and the boys’ Will Holt finished 21st overall in the 55-meter hurdles. He ran an 8.13 in the prelims and failed to advance to the semifinals.
“It wasn’t our best day but what an indoor season these four kids have had,” Dryden coach Lee Stuttle said. “I couldn’t be prouder. We are looking forward to the outdoorseason.”
Lansing had a trio of pole vaulters in the competition. For the girls, Hayley Wigsten placed 23rd with a clear of 9 feet; the boys had two competitors entered, Dylan Bland (9th place, 14-0) and Max Jordan (no height). Ben Eisenhut of Lansing placed 22nd in the 1,000 meters (2:38.82) and Trumansburg’s Tyler Sutherland was 25th in the 3,000 (9:50.22).
Section 4 had a pair of individual champions on the boys’ side — junior Matt Murray of Norwich in the 600 meters (1:20.61) and senior Cory McCarty of Elmira, who won the 1,000 meters in 2:29.90. McCarty, who finished fifth last year, plans to run in the 800 meters this weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory in New York City.
