Ithaca Journal - Hutchinson leads quartet of Purple Lions into states

ITHACA — Several local indoor track athletes earned berths in the upcoming state championships with their performances at the Section 4 state qualifier Saturday at Cornell’s Barton Hall, site of the state meet.
Dryden High senior Rachel Hutchinson took first in the girls’ 1,000 meters, in a personal-best and school-record time of 2 minutes, 57.32 seconds. Hutchinson, ranked among the nation’s leaders in the 1,000 this season, also placed second in the girls’ 1,500 meters in 5:09.23 but she will compete in just the 1,000 at states. Hutchinson was named girls’ track MVP for the meet.
Also advancing to states from Dryden were Abbey Yatsko, MacKenzie Todd and Will Holt. Yatsko broke the school record in the 300 meters, winning the event in a time of 41.53 seconds. She finished 1.6 seconds ahead of runner-up Emily Stiker of Corning.
Yatsko also qualified in the 55-meter dash with a personal-best time of 7.56, taking second in the event to Notre Dame’s Brittany Schutrum (7.33).
Todd finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 71/4 inches, and earned a trip to states. And Holt placed second in the finals of the boys’ 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.15 seconds, earning him his second trip to states.
Lansing’s Ben Eisenhut qualified for states in the boys’ 1,000 meters, finishing second in a time of 2.35.99, while Trumansburg’s Tyler Sutherland qualified with a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters (9:41.48).
Lansing also qualified three pole vaulters for states. In the girls’ event, Hayley Wigsten qualified second with a height of 9 feet, while the Bobcats swept the boys’ competition, Dylan Bland (13-0) and Max Jordan (12-6) taking 1-2.
The state meet is slated for this Saturday at Cornell.

Dryden Place Winners

We had an amazing day at the State Qual today, we had 9 personal records, 2 school records, 4 kids that made it to the State Meet and a Section 4 MVP. Rachel Hutchinson was awarded the Section 4 MVP award, she finished the day with a school record and first place finish in the 1000m in 2:57.32 and will compete next week at the State Meet. Along with Rachel competing next week is Abbey Yatsko, MacKenzie Todd and Will Holt. Abbey broke the school record in the 300m running  41.53 (PR and School Record) in winning fashion and will also compete in the 55m with a PR of 7.56. MacKenzie continues to long jump very well for this time of the season. She finished 2nd with a jump, 16-7.25 and also placed in her other 2 events, (4th 55mH 9.21 PR, and 6th in triple 31-11.5) Will had a nice race of 8.15 in the 55mH which will get him to his 2nd State Meet.

From the Coach - Dryden Section IV Playoffs

Var Boys Basketball vs Chenango Valley, 2/20

Last night Dryden season finished with a 66-60 loss at Chenango Valley.  Dryden finished the season at 12-6.  Dryden was led by Gage Ellis who had 19 points and 7 rebounds.  Bryan Norman added 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Ali Abel-Ferretti chipped in with a double-double, recording 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Dryden led 12-7 after the first quarter.  Norman with 6 and Ellis with 4.  "We led after the first quarter, but we missed several shots within 10 feet.  I felt as though we left 8-10 points on the floor after the first quarter.  You have to convert when you are close to the rim and we did not in the first quarter."  Dryden would lead 25-24 at the half.  CV would outscore Dryden 23-14 in the third quarter.  "We struggled getting the ball inbounds at times after they scored.  We simply needed to put more pace on the ball and we didn't."  Dryden would outscore CV 21-19 in the fourth but it was too late.  "I thought we played well for most of the game, and provided plenty of help defensively.  It would have been nice to have the opportunity to score when the clock wasn't moving."  CV would attempt 30 free-throws, Dryden would attempt 14.  "This group have been an absolute pleasure to coach.  They were the first group to commit to the program allowing us to attend team camps and fall leagues.  With them leaving, we will need a new leader to move this group forward.

Class B Boys First Round

Games at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
No. 6 Dryden at No. 3 Chenango Valley
In a lower bracket, the Lions would have had a home game, however, as a Class B team Dryden will head out to Chenango Valley on Wednesday. The team had a strong season and a win over potential sectional champion Moravia earlier in the year is proof that this team can beat anyone. Bryan Norman is the lead dog on this offense, but the team will likely need to turn to others as well to have success in the sectional tournament. The one nice thing about the smaller tournament size is that Dryden is only two wins from the finals.
Class C Boys First Round
Games at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
No. 6 Lansing hosts No. 11 Bainbridge-Guilford
Lansing narrowly missed out on a division championship and will have had a week’s worth of practice in hand when they take back to the court. The Bobcats’ second half of the season wasn’t as impressive as their first half, but they were still a strong team that can play with any team in the Class C Bracket.
No. 9 Spencer-Van Etten at No. 8 Odessa-Montour
Thanks to a good run at the end of the season, Spencer-Van Etten pulled the seed immediately below the champions of their shared IAC South Small School Division, Odessa-Montour. Spencer-Van Etten matches up fairly well with O-M and the Panthers will do all they can to pull off the slight upset.
No. 12 Newfield at No. 4 Greene
Newfield had a tough stretch of games to close the season and this game should be just as tough. It will be interesting to see if this scrappy Trojans team has become battle hardened from that stretch. In any case, the fact that neither team is familiar with the other could be a help or hindrance to either team.

IAC Girls's Basketball All Stars Announced

It’s that time of year again. Time to hand out post season awards. The IAC has picked their girls basketball all stars and one of the division MVPs was a little surprising.

Well, it’s not surprising taking into account how impressive Shea McCartney was while leading the Lansing Ladycats to an undefeated season in the IAC. The surprising thing is that she’s only a sophomore. McCartney averaged 17.7 points per game this season and should be the anchor of good Lansing teams for years to come. Teammates Audrey Eastman and twin sister Maura McCartney were both named to the first team, while Liz Gonyea and Brittney Mikula both earned second team nominations in the IAC North Large Division.
Anna Shelley and Megan McIntyre represent the Trumansburg girls on the first team and Kate Holland was named to the second team for Dryden.
In the North Small School Division, Groton’s Ruthanne Forehand won the MVP honors. Her teammates Steffanie Preston and Kylene Hall were both named to the North Small first team.
In the South Small Division, Callie Patsellis was named the MVP. Newfield’s first team representatives were Erica Carney and Rebecca Wood, while Megan Pakkala and Lindsey Wood were named to the second team. Candor earned a spot on the first team in the form of Sierra Szwec.
The playoffs are a busy time. All the sports come to an end at right about the same time. It can make for some hectic scheduling and can make getting all the events covered tough on a small newspaper staff. If you are a coach or scorekeeper please send in results to us. As for the teams playing for postseason glory my money would be on the Lansing girls’ basketball team. They could be joining the Trumansburg boys’ track and field team as winter season sectional champions this year. However, there are match up issues a savvy team with the right personnel could exploit, and I wonder if that team could be Newfield. If Newfield can get business done at home against Greene in the first round, it could be a great game next Friday in Lansing.
Another pair of darkhorse basketball teams to watch are the Dryden boys in Class B and the Spencer-Van Etten boys in Class C. Both put together some big wins during the season and could surprise a few teams. In the case of Dryden in a shortened bracket all they’d need to do is surprise a few teams.

From the Coach - IAC JV Boys Basketball Championship

 JV Boys Basketball vs Waverly 2/13

Last night Dryden fell to host Waverly in the IAC Large North Champiosnhip 61-51.  Dryden was led by freshmen Matt McHerron who had 17 points on 8/12 from the floor, while also collecting 4 rebounds, 3 asists and 2 steals.  Noah Welgoss added 10 points, Thad LeViere 8 and Stu Stahlman 7 points and 15 rebounds.  Dryden would dig themselves a deep first-quarter hole, but a defensive change would allow the purple lions to eliminate that deficit and take the lead late in the second quarter.  After a couple Waverly field goals late in the second quarter, Waverly would lead 31-28 at the half.  Waverly would outscore Dryden 18-7 in the third quarter to take a commanding 14-point lead headed into the final quarter.
