Marathon’s Dan Lincoln (10) soars trying to get a head on a ball handled by Dryden goalie Haile Cutter during Wednesday’s IAC North Division soccer match-up, as Cody Morrison of Marathon looks on. Visiting Marathon posted a 2-0 victory.
Solid defense and two timely second half goals led to a big soccer win for Marathon Central boys Wednesday.
The Olympians held a high-powered Dryden High attack to just four shots as Jeff Contri and Ryan Tillotson netted goals during a 2-0 Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division victory for the visitors.
Both teams are 2-1 in division and overall play after the match,
Elsewhere in the IAC, Trumansburg topped Groton 3-1 and Elmira Notre Dame tripped Tioga 2-1.
Marathon 2, Dryden 0: “We’re getting there,” Marathon coach Chip Stewart said after the crucial early-season road win. “It wasn’t spectacular, but it was a good win.
“We picked our spots when it came to possessing the ball,” he added. “We did panic in the box at times. Giving up six corners was not good, but we overcame that.”
The game was played between the 18s most of the match. The Olympians would hold a slight 7-4 edge in shots, but the visitors only had four cornerkicks.
“Dryden did control the ball well and strung passes together in the midfield,” Stewart said. “They just could not hit the enter pass into the box. Tyler Hollerer and Cody Barry played very well for us and helped prevent that.”
“Our ball possession was very good for most of the game,” Dryden coach Laszlo Engel said. “Marathon defended very well as we could not find the space to shoot. We were dangerous many times, but we were unable to get a quality shot off as their defense went hard to the ball and did well closing us down. We certainly learned a couple things that we can work on.”
After a scoreless first half, the Olympians took advantage of a pair of unsettled situations in the Dryden box. The first came midway in the half when Jeff Contri recovered a loose ball and fired by Purple Lion goalkeeper Haile Cutter (4 saves). It was a similar play three minutes later that gave Marathon a two-goal advantage. This time, Ryan Tillotson got the ball and delivered it into the back of the net. It was Tillotson’s first varsity goal.
“I told the guys that it was 0-0 at the half,” Stewart said. “I told them games like this come down to a key restart or a loose ball. That certainly did happen today.”
Marathon goalkeeper Kyle Young recorded two saves to earn the clean sheet.
Marathon will return to North Small School Division competition Friday. The Olympians will travel to Groton for a 4:30 p.m. match.
Dryden will head to Trumansburg for North Large School Division play Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Trumansburg 3, Groton 1: Will Stoughton notched a second-half goal, but it was the only tally for Groton as the visiting Indians dropped a 3-1 North Division decision at Trumansburg.
“We really played hard with just 12 guys,” Groton coach John D’Antonio said. “We were close, but just got tired in the end.
“Nate Cotterill and Joel Twitchell had really good defensive efforts,” he added. “Alec Young played a solid game in goal.”
The Blue Raiders (2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first half as Josiah Peck scored the lone goal in the first 40 minutes.
Stoughton tied the game at 1-1 with 21 minutes left on a nice shot from the left corner of the box and stuck the ball in the upper 90 of the goal. It was Stoughton’s first varsity goal of his career with Tim Bexendell assisting.
With 12 minutes left, Trumansburg took the lead for good as Kevin Pritts found an opening and scored. Mark Cooley gave the Blue Raiders an insurance goal with two minutes to go. Assists were dished out by Abreham Kittel, Kyle Carr and Gabe Dell’Accio.
Young finished with nine saves in the Indians (0-2). Seamus Henehan made three saves for the Blue Raiders.

Dryden Beats Groton in Early Tilt

Posted: Wednesday, September 5, 2012 11:22 am ( Ithaca Times )
Two programs on different ends of the spectrum faced off last Thursday as Groton hosted Dryden for the Indian’s first game.
The final score of 12-2 showed where both programs stand right now; the Purple Lions program returning 20 players from last year’s team outscoring an Indians team with only 13 dressed for the game. Still there were good things to take away from the game for both teams.
For coach John D’Antonio, he’s trying to keep the most realistic goals for his Groton team. While the team isn’t likely to win the Interscholastic Athletic Conference title, he was happy that they were able to do something they haven’t done in a few years; score on a Dryden team. Both of Groton’s goals came in the second half, with one being more of a lucky goal. In the waning minutes, Groton’s second goal was much more skillfully put together. The Indians moved the ball downfield and showed off some strong passing before getting off the score. Nate Cotterill hit Garrett Lockwood for the goal.
“We understand that there’s going to be some tough times,” said D’Antonio. “But you know what? We’re going to keep working hard to improve. And we scored two goals here in the second half, so we’re not going to put any shame in that.”
D’Antonio is prepping the team for some tough games like this, because not only are the teams in the IAC North some of the tougher teams in the conference but they are some of the tougher teams in the state. D’Antonio noted that Lansing in Class C, Marathon in Class D, and some combination of Trumansburg, Union Springs, and Dryden could all represent the IAC past the sectional round. Groton plays each of those schools twice this season.
With that schedule in mind and a fairly young team, development of the program for the future is the goal. Cotterill and Joel Twitchell are senior captains and Justin Tinelli should provide senior leadership for the team.
“They understand that it’s their senior year and they probably want to win some games, but at the same time they’ve been great in trying to help develop the kids and that’s what they should be proud of,” said D’Antonio.
Groton lost goalkeeper Brandon Pollack to graduation this year. Pollack was an IAC allstar and one of their best players. Goalkeeping is a work in progress for Groton right now, but defensive tips from players like Twitchell are helping the new goalies learn on the job.
For Dryden, it’s a completely different story. Dryden coach Lazlo Engel has a large but still a little raw group returning from last year. Last year the squad had 15-16 freshmen or sophomores , according to Engel. They did lose some talented players in Dana Smith, their leading goal scorer from last year, and also starter John Tate. For their second game, 12 goals was a good feat, but Engel knows there’s still a few things the team needs to work on for upcoming games against the top teams in the IAC.
“What we’re working on is just playing a good brand of soccer,” said Engel. “The wins and all that stuff will happen if we play, what we’re calling the Dryden way. Possess, pass, move, find the open space, create space for your teammates and help your teammates; that’s the mentality we’re trying to get them in.”
Gabi Guisado and Greg Nostrand had three goals each and Engel expects those two to pick up some of the scoring the team lost from Smith’s departure. Mike Harvey chipped in two goals and an assist and Matt Horton, Joe Delucia, and Tim Lewis all scored for Dryden. Jake Czapranski, another player Engel is looking to step up, had two assists in the game. Dryden was able to get every player from their deep bench some time out on the field.

Dryden Boys Soccer Preview - Cortland Standard

Link to whole season preview -http://www.cortlandstandard.net/story002.html

DRYDEN PURPLE LIONS
Coach: Laszlo Engel, 13th year

10-4-1 IAC, 11-5-1 overall in 2011
Dryden lost five seniors, but returns 20 players, 10 of which played starting roles during the 2011 season. The Purple Lions have a total of 24 players, 15 of them juniors.
“We are still a young team, but more experienced,” said Engel. “These guys have a good work ethic and are working very hard. They have been a fun bunch to work with in the preseason.
“What is nice is that we spent a lot of last year working on fundamentals,” he continued. “This year, we are able to work more on the tactical side of the game. We are certainly starting off better than last year, but there is still room for improvement.”
Heading the list of returnees are seniors Greg Nostrand (central midfield), Randy Bushnell (central back), John Czapranski (outside midfield) and Jacob Soroka (outside midfield-back). The first three are entering their third year of varsity play and were starters one year ago. Nostrand, a first-team all-star in 2011, and Bushnell are two of the team captains this fall.
Heading the 14 returning juniors are third-year players and team captains Michael Harvey (outside forward) and Jonathan Becker (defender-midfield). They are joined by classmates Ross Cole (outside defender), Ryan Prunty (outside midfielder), Joe DeLucia ( outside defender), John Whitmore (outside midfielder), Ben Lewis (central midfielder), Levi Crognale (outside defender), Sean Iannello (defender-midfield), Pericles Hayes (defender), Jacob Czapranski (attack midfielder), Josh Hutchinson (outside midfielder), Haile Cutter (goalkeeper) and Daniel Fuller (midfielder-defender). Cole, Harvey, Whitmore, Becker, Hayes, Czapranski and Cutter were 2011 starters. Becker was another all-star in 2011.
Rounding out the returnees are sophomore Tim Lewis (central midfielder-forward) and Gabriel Guisado (forward).
The four new faces are junior walk-on Howard Lauretti (midfielder), plus sophomores Jacob Yatsko (defender-midfielder), Matthew Horton (forward-midfielder) and Walter Vasquez (forward)
As for the competition in the North Division, Engel believes his team can hold its own.
“Trumansburg will be tough in the Large Division,” Engel said. “Lansing is always good and Marathon is always tough (among the Small Schools). The one team I’m not sure about is Union Springs-Port Byron. It really is a tough division. We certainly can be competitive is the division.”

Congrats are in Order - Dryden Golf - Ithaca Times

Ithaca Times

Posted: Wednesday, May 2, 2012 12:15 am
Congratulations are in order for a few teams and athletes this week. First of all congrats to the Dryden golf team who qualified for their first sectional championship meet since 2003.
The boys did so by heading out to Indianhead Golf Course, the home of Union Springs, and edging out their opponents 207-211. Their team score of 27-over-par was enough for the win and for the sectional berth.

The Purple Lions golfers were edged out of medalist honors, however. Dryden’s top golfer junior Ryan Whitaker was tied through eight holes with Union Springs junior Austin Thomas. By the time the golfers had hit the ninth and final hole, a par-3, neither had shot a bogey all day. Thomas ended up with a birdy on the hole for a 34, while Whitake had to settle for a par-36. Riley Brewer came in a stroke behind with a 37 for Dryden. Dryden, who improved to 5-2 on the season, still have few head-to-head matches on the schedule, including Friday’s bout against Lansing. Additionally the IAC championship and Individual Medalist Tournament are both before the May 24 Section 4 Class B championships.
In other news the Candor track team broke a long standing school record. Last week the Candor girls’ 400-meter relay team beat record set in 1991 during a match against Newark Valley. The team consisted of Bekah Fay, Olivia Reagan, Sierra Szwec and Rebeckah Whitmore.
Teams should all be hitting their stride now, track athletes and golfers in particular. The postseason events are just around the corner and runners should be turning in times they’re comfortable with, but still can improve. For golfers they just want to make sure that the majority of their shots are straight and they’re making most of their puts. Golfers in the area still fluctuate in relationship to par, but by now they’re hoping their scores aren’t all over the place. As it looks Trumansburg, Dryden, Lansing and Groton should all send golfers to the Individual medalist tourney and few look like they might be able to play past the first day.
As far as baseball goes, we’ve got a good idea who’s for real by now, at least in the IAC large school divisions. Lansing remains undefeated at 12-0 overall and 9-0 in the IAC. Dryden and Trumansburg are still giving chase at 6-3 each in the IAC, but at this point it’s Lansing’s division to lose. Unfortunately the small school divisions in  the IAC have taken a trouncing, outside of Thomas A. Edison. The perennial baseball powerhouse is also 9-0 in the IAC, 12-2 overall. Spencer-Van Etten, Tioga and Newfield all sit next win line with three wins. Newfield will have a little bit of digging to get themselves back to a winning record but it’s not impossible. They do have to go through Spencer-Van Etten this Friday, who has been holding their own in a challenging conference. S-VE still has a good chance of finishing around .500 and getting a chance to make noise in the sectional playoffs. Waverly rules the IAC South Large School division with an 8-1 IAC record compiled against the large and small schools.
The dominance of the IAC North Large schools has created a logjam in the IAC North Small School Division. Marathon and Moravia each have three IAC wins and Groton and Union Spring have two wins each. Groton, however, runs into a buzzsaw in the form of a double header against Lansing on Wednesday.
