LANSING — Alex Purcell and Kevin Price scored goals in a two-minute span late in the second half Wednesday night and undefeated Lansing scored a 2-0 victory over previously unbeaten Dryden in Interscholastic Athletic Conference North Division boys’ soccer.

After more than 68 scoreless minutes, Purcell put the home team ahead, collecting the ball on the left side of the penalty area and carrying in unmarked to score into the side netting. Then with 10:50 to play, Jason Yahn found Price on a slotted ball from the left side, and Price finished for the insurance goal.

Mistakes down Moravia - Dryden moves to 2-0

Auburn Citizen -
September 14, 2013 10:40 pm  •
MORAVIA | Missing one of the most important pieces to their season's puzzle, the Moravia football team struggled against Dryden on Saturday afternoon.
The mistakes didn't help much, either.
The Blue Devils turned the ball over three times and committed nine penalties in a 34-12 loss to the Lions, in Moravia's home opener.
While Jared Lyon and Bryant Hough ran for more than 200 yards collectively, it was apparent early that the Blue Devils were missing their biggest weapon. Senior tailback Cody Spaulding, in street clothes and crutches nearby, was on the bench. One of the team's biggest leaders, Spaulding suffered a torn ACL in the first quarter of last week's game against Unadilla Valley.
"He probably got 10 plays in and his season's over," said Blue Devils coach John Crossgrove. "There are some things, I can't even explain, that we were going to do this year that now we might not be able to do. Now we have to have a different look on things. We've been trying to figure out how to adapt the offense without that other option. We have good kids, we'll be fine, the guys have a lot of confidence in Bryant and Jared in the backfield, we know we have guys that run it. It would have been nice to have all three of those guys."
The Blue Devils were also without Spaulding's backup, junior Alex Dzikiewicz, who had an ankle injury. Lyon and Hough played well in their absence, though, with a score apiece. Lyon had 26 carries for 185 yards, while Hough carried 12 times for 51 yards.
Moravia played a close first quarter, tying the score with 56 seconds left on Lyon's 54-yard scamper. BUt one play after the ensuing kickoff, Lions quarterback Alan Davis found Stuart Stahlman for a 59-yard score to end the period.
The ball didn't bounce the Blue Devils' way for much of the contest. Whether it was an-almost big interception, a would-be stop that turned into a fourth-down conversion, or a Lyon fake punt on a fourth-and-13 that fell about a grass blade short.
"Not finishing drives and giving away the ball, but it was a close 22-point spread at the end," Crossgrove said. "We had a play where we almost deflected a ball that turned into a reception, a lot of tight, competitive plays, but that's football. Sometimes it comes down to just a couple of inches on any play, couple inches on a fake punt would have been a first down and we could've come right back."
Down 26-6 at the half, the Blue Devils marched down the field to begin the second half. A short kickoff because of a Dryden defensive penalty at the end of the first half put Moravia on the Dryden 29-yard line to start, and two Lyon runs set up Hough for a 4-yard score.
"I think most of the kids believed that we could drive on (Dryden) as long as we finished it and we did, we figured we'd get it back," Crossgrove said. "But some untimely penalties, when you're a run-first team, its kind of hard to be first and 15."
Two fumbles and an interception crushed Moravia, but Crossgrove was encouraged by some things. His rotating quarterbacks, Dylan Richards and Cole Johnson each did some things well. Richards carried the ball three times for 39 yards, while Johnson completed four passes for 42 yards.
"They both make mistakes and they both do a lot of things right, I guess its working out as it is right now," Crossgrove said of his first-year QBs. "They're both learning and getting better. I have a lot of confidence in both of them."
On the other sideline, the Lyons' signal-caller played great. Davis scored four times, three on the ground - while racking up 113 yards on nine carries. He also went 6-for-16 for 164 yards, one score and one interception. Eymel Deas led Dryden's running backs with 83 yards on 16 carries.
Moravia (1-1) heads to Watkins Glen Friday night, with an attitude of moving forward, despite the player that isn't in uniform with them.
"We still have a lot of confidence," Crossgrove said. "It's why the team was ticked off today, they feel that they could have beat this team and I feel that way too.

Football Preview from the Ithaca Journal

Dryden - (link to article)

Class C, Division IV

LAST YEAR: 2-6
Coach Dan Fink is hopeful that his young squad — the Purple Lions have gone to a varsity/modified football program with no JVs — can improve upon last year’s 2-6 season.
“We’re hoping to win the games we’re supposed to,” he said. “We’re hoping to not lose any more than three games, based on our schedule and personnel and the fact that we’re young.”
Fink will have senior leadership in the offensive backfield from captains Alan Davis (quarterback) and Eymel Deas (quarterback/running back). The third captain is senior lineman John Sheeley (5-10, 230), who anchors both frontages. Senior running back/linebacker Tyler Andrews (6-0, 170) is a good two-way player who can contribute in many ways, Fink said, and Shawn Collins (6-3, 195) is a talented defensive end who also plays wideout.
“We are pretty young, we’ve got five seniors and a lot of sophomores,” Fink said. “We’ve got a couple of more sophomores than usual. Hopefully, we’re speedy enough to get to the outside and have some fun on the outside.”
The Purple Lions will open their season with a home game that will actually be played at Cortland, due to problems with some offseason turf work at Volante Field. Athletic director Bryan Ford is hopeful that the field will be ready for the team’s second home game, Sept. 27 against Greene

Dryden Town Talk: Teens offer a handshake of friendship to exchange student

From Cathy Wakeman's Dryden Town Talk

This summer marks 22 years that we have lived in Dryden. In these 22 years, I have grown to love this town and the people in it, but I have never been more proud than I was this past Thursday.
This past Wednesday, Dan and I became parents again. We welcomed into our family a son from Japan, Masahiro Kiba, who will be living with us and two other families during his 10-month Rotary Exchange. Among the many details of this transition is getting settled into American high school, an overwhelming proposition at any age. With less than 48 hours in our fair town, Masa ventured into a sea of purple, his first varsity soccer practice. Coach Laszlo Engel and athletic director Brian Ford graciously arranged for a place on the team and clearing all of the procedural hurdles for this to happen.
As we started up the rise to the field, that uncertain pause of where to go first must have been clear on our faces. Without hesitation, a contingent of purple clad young men started down the field. With wide smiles and extended hands, they offered generous welcome and kind introductions, breaching a chasm of language and culture.
Having known most of these fine fellows since they were toddlers, my heart melted with pride at what fine young men they have become, and how well they represented their team, their families and their town.
My hat is off to you, Ben Lewis, Ryan Prunty, Levi Crognale, John Varvayanis, Gabby Guisado, Dan Fuller, Josh Hutchinson, and Jon Becker. As we cheer from the sidelines for you and the rest of the 2013 Dryden High soccer team this season, it will be for more than just your amazing soccer skills. It will be for the fine young gentlemen who carry and share respect. Dryden is rightfully proud.

Dryden Boys Soccer wins opener

Dryden 3, Whitney Point 1: Gabriel Guisado, Jacob Czapranski and Padraic Ianello scored and Haile Cutter made one save to lead the Purple Lions.
Guisado converted his own rebound in the first half to give Dryden a 1-0 halftime lead, and Czapranski got the eventual winner early in the second half.
“I liked our play today,” Dryden coach Laszlo Engel said. “We are learning a new system and will certainly make it better as we go along. We do need to convert more of our chances, but I know that will happen as they become more confident in the system.”
Dryden outshot WP, 31-4, and had a 6-3 edge in corners.
Zachary Marsh had the goal for the Eagles.

Local Teams Hope to Build on Successful 2012 Seasons

Ithaca . com

Jesse Disbrow
The fall sports season started on Monday with practices for all sports in Section IV getting under way. It always feels like a short summer but with the weather starting to cool off a little bit here in late August, it’s probably time to think about football, soccer and the rest of the fall sports.
There will be several fall sports teams looking to build on successful seasons from last year. Groton returned to the playoffs last season and also made a return to the Section IV Class D title game. The younger Groton team was up against the powerhouse that is Tioga in that match and came away on the short end. Tioga eventually won a state championship at Class D. Lansing also made their return to the playoffs earning a spot after several years away from the finals. Including a win over Class C Dryden and a win over Candor that brought the rivalry Jug back after many years, Spencer-Van Etten ended with a 7-2 overall record. However, they finished third in their division and missed the playoffs. They look to rectify that mistake this season.
In other football notes, Newfield will not be sending kids to Trumansburg this year, nor will they be able to field their own team. Union Springs has merged teams with Section 3’s Port Byron and will compete in Section 3 and Thomas A. Edison, who folded their team two weeks into the season last year, will attempt to field a team this year. Deposit/Hancock will be a Section 9 team, but will play a schedule featuring only Section IV teams. Also, unlike the last few years, the Candor/S-VE Jug Game will not be the first week. It will instead be the second week of the season. In addition, there will be two at large bids in the playoffs in Class D this year, meaning that if every thing happens the same way it did last season, S-VE would make the playoff this year.
In boys soccer, the Lansing boys went to a state final in Class C, but fell short of a state title. They’ll be hard pressed to do so again this season after losing a number of quality seniors. However, they still should be in line to compete for a sectional title and from there, who knows? Dryden, however, will be a major player in that same division. They return almost all of their players once again and could end up chasing a division and section championship themselves. Trumansburg had a great season last year, but was senior heavy. It will be interested to see whether the younger players step up this year. The Spencer-Van Etten Boys won their division in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference last year. They’ll look to do so again and make a bigger splash in the postseason than last year.
The Spencer-Van Etten girls won their first ever division title last year and played well in the IAC championship. Newfield did the same two years ago and will look to challenge the Panthers for the division. The Dryden girls ended a stranglehold on the IAC North by rival Lansing, winning their division and the overall championship. They’ll look to hold on to that top spot, although they lost a few strong seniors and Lansing’s young players are a year bigger and more experienced. Groton had a senior heavy team that made a splash last year as well.
In volleyball, Lansing, Trumansburg, and Candor all made it to pool play in the Section IV tournament. Each team has been a perennial player when it’s come to the playoffs and it’s likely that won’t change. The battle will be for the IAC Large School North Division between Lansing and Trumansburg.
