NYSPHSAA Track

VARSITY TRACK & FIELD
STATES

Dryden Results:
Bryant Stuttle: 3rd triple jump 44-11.75
        Rachel Hutchinson: 4th 1500m 4:39.82
Megan Cornelius: 4th pole vault 10-0

        Abbey Yatsko:   15th 100m 12.84
                                15th 200m 26.35
400m relay:     14th 51.75 (Amy DeGaetano, Rachel Wojik, Mackenzie Todd, A. Yatsko)
        Will Holt: 15th 110mH 16.39

We went to States with eight kids and came back with 3 medals, not too bad. Bryant jumped really well with only getting 3 jumps instead of the usual 6 since there were no division finals. (Because of the rain out on Friday only the top 8 overall D1 and D2 got 3 more jumps). His 44-11.75 was on his first jump, on his second he hit a huge jump but was ruled a foul by 1/4" and on his third he jumped 44-6. I like the fact that he is finally healthy and jumping without pain as we travel to Greensboro, NC for the Outdoor National Meet this upcoming Friday.

Rachel ran a super race, just missed her own school record and got on the State award stand for the first time. Rachel will go down as one of the best Dryden distance runners in history as she owns 4 individual school records and is part of 4 relay school records.

Megan had a nice day, clearing 10-0 and almost clearing 10-6 on her last attempt. This was her first State Meet experience and she handled it very well.

On a side note; locals Bryant Stuttle, Dryden, and Erica Carney, Newfield, were named the Section 4 Sportsmanship Winners as voted on by the Section 4 track coaches and coordinators. Bryant will continue to jump and study at Cornell University this fall while Erica will be going to Liberty University in Virginia.

Dryden athletes shine at rain-delayed state meet

Ithaca Journal

MIDDLETOWN — Bryant Stuttle, Rachel Hutchinson and Megan Cornelius of Dryden all came home with medals in Saturday’s state high school track & field championships, held at Faller Field on the campus of Middletown High School.
The scheduled two-day championships were compressed to a single day after rain and flooding concerns scrapped Friday’s competition.
In Division 2 competition , Stuttle placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet, 11½ inches. He was 10th overall, three spots better than Ithaca High junior Mande Semon (44-7½), who took ninth in Division 1.
Hutchinson finished fourth in the Division 2 girls’ 1,500 meter race, crossing the line in 4 minutes, 39.82 seconds. She took 11th overall, and was just five seconds behind Division 2 winner Meredith Rizzo of Bronxville. Hutchinson finishes her Dryden career as the holder of four individual school records and part of four relay records.
Cornelius finished fourth in the Division 2 pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, good for 14th overall. Hayley Wigsten of Lansing was 19th (9-0).
Also earning a medal was Newfield’s Erica Carney, who placed third in Division 2 (14th overall) in the long jump with a leap of 16-9.

For Ithaca’s girls, Lauren Trumble placed 24th overall (13th in Div. 1) in the 800 with a time of 2:24.49. Sophomore Sabrina Southerland of Cardozo set a meet record with her victory in 2:06.09.
Ihotu Onah placed 20th overall (12th in Div 1) in the discus with a throw of 107-2, and Emma Denman matched her pentathlon finish from last year with an 11th-place effort on Saturday, with a point total of 2,644. Her best finishes in the five-discipline event came in the 100 hurdles (9th, 16.07) and the long jump (10th, 15-8¼).
Lansing pole vaulters Dylan Bland and Max Jordan placed 13th and 16th overall, respectively.
NOTE: Stuttle of Dryden and Carney of Newfield were named the Section 4 Sportsmanship Winners, as voted on by Section 4 track coaches and coordinators. Stuttle is headed to Cornell in the fall, while Carney will be going to Liberty University in Virginia.

High School Roundup: Dryden, Ithaca athletes excel at Section 4 state track and field qualifier

Ithaca Jornal

VESTAL — Eight Dryden track and field athletes — six girls and two boys — will be in Middletown next weekend for the state championship meet after their showings on Thursday at the Section 4 state qualifier, held at Vestal High’s Hoover Stadium.
Also, Ithaca High will be sending handful of male athletes, including sprinter Mande Semon, who won the 100 meters, led off Ithaca’s record-setting 400 relay and also qualified in the long jump.
Freshman Abbey Yatsko led the way for Coach Lee Stuttle’s Dryden squad, qualifying in two individual events and as a member of a relay team. Yatsko, who competed in the 300 meters at the state indoor championships at Cornell this past winter, will compete outdoors in the 100 and 200 meters. She won the 200 at the qualifier in 26.26 seconds, and placed second in the 100, at 12.82.
Yatsko will also anchor Dryden’s 400 relay, joining teammates Amy DeGaetano, Rachel Wojcik and Mackenzie Todd. Dryden placed fourth in the qualifier, in a time of 50.95 seconds.
Rachel Hutchinson will represent Dryden and Section 4 in the 1,500 meters, after winning the event at the qualifier in a time of 4 minutes, 41.37 seconds. She beat Elmira’s Melinda Wheeler by 3.01 seconds; Hutchinson finished eighth in the 1,000 meters at indoor states this year.
Also qualfying for the Dryden girls was Megan Cornelius in the pole vault. She placed third in the qualifier with a leap of 10 feet.
On the boys’ side, Bryant Stuttle took second at the qualifier in the triple jump (45-4), qualifying for his third state meet. Will Holt will compete in both the 110 and 400 hurdles after placing fifth and third, respectively, on Thursday.
“I am excited for the kids.” Coach Stuttle said. “We take a pretty experienced group, and Abbey, only a freshman and making it in three events, is amazing. I am looking forward to a great week of practice, and then we’ll see what happens at states.”
Semon, a junior, led the charge for the Ithaca boys, taking the 100 in 10.90 seconds, winning by nearly 0.2 seconds over runner-up Zach Bush of Corning (11.07). He also led off the Little Red’s 400 relay, which broke a 15-year-old school record by winning in 42.94 seconds, chopping .06 off the old record. The record-setting foursome includes Semon, Roosevelt Lee, Jordan Hackworth and Bruce Greene.
Semon also qualified in the triple jump, winning at the qualifier with a leap of 45-7 ¼, just over three inches better than Dryden’s Stuttle. Hackworth will be at states in the long jump, finishing second on Thursday with a jump of 22-8 ¾, which also broke the school record.
Ithaca sophomore Dan Dracup lost a close battle in the boys’ 800 meters, finishing second to Elmira’s Cory McCarty, 1:55.50 to 1:56.63. Matt Murray of Norwich was third in 1:58.49.
Lansing’s Dylan Bland will also be making the trip to Middletown after winning Thursday night’s pole vault competition with a leap of 13-6.
On the girls’ side for Ithaca, Lauren Trumble placed third in the 800 meters, in 2:21.21, followed by Dryden’s Hutchinson (2:21.93).
